What E4OD years interchange?

What E4OD years interchange?
I have a bad transmission in my 1996 E350
Everyone Ive talked to says a 96 has to be replaced with another 96
Does anyone have any idea if this is true?
I have a possiblity of getting a 97 transmission dont want to miss it if it will work

I am not the authority on this but my understanding is that any E4OD from a 7.3 will work. It has to be from a diesel though, not a 460 as the bell housings are different. Also the output shaft and tail housings are different between a 4x4 and 4x2.
