Transmission
Well the E4OD was the automatic. Personally have never had any experience with the other you mentioned and wasn't aware of any other automatic available in 96. The M5OD was the manual 1/2 ton tranny that you could get. The E4OD is huge and most trannies can be identified by their pan. By 96 the E4OD had been improved quite a bit from its earlier versions that were susceptable to hard shifting and premature death.
Check your door frame sticker. E4OD is TR code E. If you have a 351 (5.8L) you probably have the E4OD. But if you have a 302 (5.0L) you probably have the 4R70W.
