im changing my trans fluid soon, and i looked in my haynes manual, but it doesn't say what fluid to use on the e40d, so i looked on my dipstick and it did say to use mercon. but..which kind? i no of a few different ones. do i use ATF? i have a 4.9l i-6, 95 f150 xl 4x4 with e40d trans. thanks
E4ODs were originally filled with Mercon III. Mercon V came out for the newer trannies (4R70W, 4R100 and newer) and (I think) was specified as a replacement for Mercon III in the older trannies, but was causing problems in the older trannies until the reformulation Mark Kovalsky mentioned above.
I had a thumb wrestling match with the Ford dealership parts counter dude about Mercon and him insisting on selling me Mercon V as the non-V was no longer available. I bought that V and put it in this weekend. So far my truck didn't explode.

IDK about other brands, but the Motorcraft Mercon V is also compatible with regular Mercon & Dexron III.
