I want to change the trans fluid and filter on my 4wd 2000 Expy that has almost 200K miles.
It has not been changed in 50K miles so I know it is long overdue.
According to my Owner's Guide, I should use the type of fluid indicated on the dipstick handle, which reads "use Mercon". I crawled under the truck to look at the trans and couldn't find an I.D. to verify the trans was a 4R100, so I'll use Mercon (not Mercon V).
I went to Wal-mart for fluid and all I could find was Pennzoil ATF that is labelled "for use in vehicles previously servicable by Dextron -lll/Mercon brands". ?
My question is, is this good replacement fluid or should I seek out Mercon fluid? I'm on a budget so I don't want to splurge on the ultimate fluid.
You can use Mercon V in the tranny, it's a fluid that supersedes regular Mercon. For some reason on some brands of Mercon V it say to not use it in transfer cases. So watch for that.
TSB says "MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as a service fluid."
That is somewhat confusing to me since there are warnings about the fluids.
My Owner's Guide says (in BOLD letters) that dual usage fluids are not to be used in a MERCON trans and are not interchangable.
My bottle of Pennzoil ATF says not to use it in trans that specify MERCON V fluids.
Mercron V is a full synthetic and should not cause any problems in the older 4R100 transmissions. It should actually lubricate them better. The real problem comes from dumping regular old Mercron in a transmission that requires Mercron V. That's asking for a melt down. I'm not familar with Penzoil ATF so I can't comment on that.

My 98 Expy requires Mercon V..... its strange that a 2000 would require Mercon.
It depends on the transmission that was installed not the year model. Of course I don't understand the logic of putting 2 different types of transmissions in the same year models to start with. It only creates confusion.
