Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out what transmission fluid to use in my truck. Its a 2002 f250 super duty 6.8L v-10 4x4 with an auto. I've looked in the owners guide and cant for the life of me figure out what type of transmission i have. Do I need to know what type of fluid to use or is it just the mercon ATF as is says in the owners guide? Also how much fluid do i need. 17 quarts??? damn that seems like alot. Thanks
Yes, your manual/trans does technically call for Mercon transmission fluid. That being said Mercon V is backwards compatible with Mercon fluid. It’s getting very difficult to find a Mercon only spec fluid since Mercon V was released. There were some issues with Mercon V being used in Mercon speced transmissions when it was initially released. As a result, there are still some people touting anecdotal claims that you cannot use Mercon V stuff in a 4R100. Ford says you can, and Mark K. (Former Ford Senior Trans Engineer who posts on here) says you can so that’s good enough for me.
I’d go grab 20 quarts of Mercon V fluid and swap the fluid.
Dang you Bill, I nearly googled Mercon VEE to see it there was a newer Mercon, figuring the EE stood for Extra Engineered or something. Where's my sign?
