Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum.
I am working on my sister's 1992 F-250, 7.3, with an ATS turbo. I helped fix some oil leaks and now I need to re-time the injection pump. I static timed it but I have yet to dynamic time it.
I acquired a pulse adapter that clamps around the #1 injector line and has a loop for an inductive timing light to clamp onto. I hooked everything up and got the timing light to work well. Now, I can't find the timing marks on the pulley or block. I can see a line on the pulley when I get the flash, but there is nothing to reference it to for degrees or even TDC. I am looking at the top right side of the pulley where the bracket is for a magnetic pick-up I figure. Where do I find the timing marks on this engine?
Yup, there's only the one marker on the dampener, you need a timing light that can be adjusted to around 8.5 degrees. I found this out after buying the Ferret pulse adapter, and then had to buy another timing light since my ancient craftsman was useless for timing the IDI (bought a Snap-On light on EBay for about $30).
So I am guessing the timing light also has to have a pulse pickup? I don't see another mark on the block or on the bracket around the dampener to compare the TDC mark to.
You're trying to line the groove in the dampener up with the edge of the 'bracket' (as you put it). Adjust your timing light to 8.5 and have someone hold the pedal to about 2000 rpm and see where the marks are at. Shut it off, rotate the pump to get it closer, and do it all over again. It can take a bit of time...
Alright, well, since I have a non-adjustable timing light, I will be marking my pulley. I am guessing that I should line it up with the bottom side of the pulley and not the top since that is where my groove is closest to already.
I have a Haynes manual and Chilton Manual but neither of them tells were the mark should be. I also searched before I posted and could not find it either.
I am in SE New Mexico but I am returning the truck to my sister Sunday. I timed it tonight. I figured the pulley is 7 3/32 in diameter. I computed the circumference of the pulley then divided that by 360 and multiplied by 8.5. That gave me the distance away from the groove to show 8.5 degrees BTDC. I marked the pulley on the advanced side (counter-clockwise from the driver's seat position). I then started the truck and followed the timing procedure.
