I know this has been covered SEVERAL times but just to be sure, I am gonna invest in timing tools. The ferret with 1/4" adapter looks to be the one of choice and very simple to use. Any other things I should know before I buy? New by the way. Any suggestions on a good light?
The timing light I use was reasonably priced, and the reviews were decent. Some have claimed that the lcd screen has malfunctioned, but mine is still working well. Any timing light will work, but you really want one with timing advance and rpm features, and preferably that can be read simultaneously. There are a lot of threads on the subject here. Search "Ferret timing meter".
I just timed mine with a Fox Valley luminosity probe and Snap-On digital timing light for about a quarter of the cost of the Ferret. A timing light with adj. advance is needed to perform this method. I dialed in 6 degrees and adjusted until the mark lined up with the "0" mark to get combustion at 6ATDC. Nearly as easy as a gasser except all the stop/start to adjust the pump.
