I am trying to check my timing with an advanced timing light and when I turn it on the pointer marks on the crankshaft pulley isn't even close to the timing marks but show up at the bottom of the engine. what am I doing wrong?
If you're positive that you have the timing light lead on #1 plug wire (or #6 if it's easier to get at...yes #6 works too), the outer ring on the balancer could have spun which is making the marks no where close to where they should be.
You could pull the balancer off and compare it to a known good one or maybe just try bringing #1 piston up to Top Dead Center and see where the timing marks line up. The keyway in the crank will be straight up when #1 is at TDC. If you remove the balancer bolt and washer you can see the keyway. At least you'd have an idea then if that was the problem. If it seemed to be, you could replace the balncer.
