Steering wheel removal?

Hey all.
I'm in the middle of preparing my bronco for its registration inspection, which so far has been a nightmare, and I have been told the aftermarkets sports steering wheel will not pass the inspection, also it touches the windscreen wiper stalk. I actually have a stock wheel to put back on it, but I noticed the hub for the aftermarket wheel has no holes in it either side of the shaft to use a conventional steering wheel puller.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Elliott.

Hmmm...apply penetrating oil. Loosen nut to just slightly above shaft. Hit it with a dead blow hammer? No experience, just thinking...

I would be very hesitant to whack on the steering shaft with a hammer, would probably wreck something inside.

Try b4hntn's idea of penetrating oil, then try wiggling the wheel up and off. If a no-go, could you drill and tap the afternmarket wheel to make it puller-compatible? A puller applies push and pull forces the right way, and won't break something expensive.

Any particular product names for penetrating oil? I have a can of loctite "freeze n release".

It has a warning on a decal affixed to the FORD badge on the centre of the stock wheel saying specifically not to whack it with a hammer, so I'm kinda reluctant to lol

Loosen the nut enough so there is a gap between it and the wheel hub. Then set your feet hard into the floorboard underneath the pedals and press your shoulders into the seat back (you may have to move the seat up a bit). Then take both arms at 6 and 3 o'clock on the wheel, pull as hard as you can while rocking the wheel back and forth. The wheel will pop loose against the nut in short order. Seriously - I have pulled more steering wheels this way than with a proper puller.

If Jas88's advice doesnt work, tap on the nut while it is loose while pulling on the wheel like he said. I have always just smacked the back of the wheel after removing the nut, the shock usually breaks the stuck on wheel off.

i had made a puller out of a sheet of scrap metal with some bolts that threaded into the holes on the side of the nut, tighten those bolts down, and the wheel pops right off. no need to go buy a proper puller

He doesnt have any holes on the aftermarket wheel.

Hey Aussie, why wouldn't they pass you with an aftermarket wheel? Just curious as I'm looking at swapping my wheel off for a nicer one.

Don't hit it with a hammer, down the steering column are a bearing and a u-joint which won't be very happy if you do.
