I have a `67 ranger. I am about to put a new steering wheel on but I can't seem to pull the old one off. I have replaced steer wheels on `72's before, like cake. All I need to do is remove the nut and pull the old wheel off correct. Thats all I had to do on the `72's. Please Help Fast!
you may have to use a puller to get it loose. that is what the 2 threaded holes in the wheel are for. if you are carefull, you can sometimes hit the shaft and knock it down enough to get the wheel loose, but i dont recomend it.
Try soaking it in lubricant overnight, like PB blaster. I have had problems with stripping the threads in the wheel before, but never breaking the puller itself. Maybe you have a thin, cheapy one. The rental stores usually have them and they tend to be good quality. Maybe you should buy the insurance, though if you go that route. It's usually only a couple bucks.
Hmmm. That is a problem. Did you give it a good whack with a hammer? I don't know how you could apply heat without melting stuff. I wonder if one of the splines is galled up? What about a set of those giant jaw style pullers? You might have to put some kind of bar stock behind the wheel for something to grab onto.
i did melt the steering wheel but i was hoping to get it off so i could replace the turn single swt. but no luck so i am trying to fiend one for the old girl but no luck yet i dont have $500.oo for custom one but would be nice i think i live in bow-tie country or some thing....
Loosen the nut, back it off till it is just flush with the end of the shaft. While pulling up (as if taking the wheel off) firmly on the wheel hit the nut/shaft combination squarely and fairly hard till it pops loose. Someone pulling and another one hitting is not a bad idea but not necessary. The splines are tapered so the first movement is all that's needed. When the wheel is loose at all, it is completely loose. When the nut is removed it will straighten any damaged threads but there shouldn't be any if you hit squarely. You are hitting the nut AND the shaft remember. The wheel will come loose before you bugger stuff up. I was taught this more than 30 years ago and it has never failed me yet. I have never owned a steering wheel puller.
