when i removed my steering wheel on my 66 f-100 4x4 who ever the dumba$$ was that had it before me striped the steering wheel nut and shaft. Thats no big deal to me i will just rethread the saft and new nut, but problem i have is there was no retainer ring on the saft for the steering wheel. Does it not need one? I dont for the life of me rember seeing one when i pulled the steering wheel.
I don't exactly know what you mean by a retainer ring, "C" clip or what?
Anyway Wheels' internal female spline has a slight taper to it. OEM Nut's supposed to seat on spline boss (metal center part) of Strg wheel. When nut's correctly tightened down, spline boss seats compressing over male steering shaft spline.
When using wheel puller to remove steering wheel, the "pop" is compresion breaking loose as bolts of wheel puller "lift" spline boss in opposite direction of compression, it is pulled into expansion thus popping or "breaking" loose.
Once it "pops" Wheel is completely loose. However before it pops it's as if nut were still there & tightened down, compressing the boss around the shaft spluine. . . . .
I might have over explained that but there's no ring used on these mid 60's steering wheel assembly systems that I know of. . . .
Just be sure your rethreads are sufficient and the retaining nut seats cleanly on the upper surface of the steering wheel spline boss, if not use a good stainless washer as a crush shim. . . .
