Carmaggedon was also forecast for all the freeways before the 1984 Summer Olympic Games were held in LA. But the reverse occurred.
Traffic was very light throughout the basin. Traffic reporter Bill Keene surmised that locals that were not planning to attend the games had all gone on vacation.
"26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is awaitin' for me, Santa Catalina...the island of...romance...romance...romance...romance." -The Four Preps.
But west of Catalina...there is nothin' but ocean. So y'all couldn't reside 61 miles west of 'seizure world' .. unless you were livin' on a "leaky rowboat."
Your killin' me ND! and a singer too!!! woohoo hidden talents showing up here!
Don't be so hasty ND... there is also Santa Barbara Island just west of Catalina, and also San Clemente Island which is just west-southwest of Santa Barbara Island... he could live on San Clemete Island, after all it is a military installation. Granted it used to be used as a bombing range for the navy, but he could live there! Hypothetically speaking of course... ahh ya gotta love kids!!!

I remember going to the track and field events at the Coliseum, and parking within a few blocks, then riding a shuttle.... also attended the archery at El Dorado Park, and the rowing at Long Beach Marine stadium. we saw no traffic with the exception of leaving the Coliseum after the track events... the Gymnastics were going in in the Sports arena next door to the Coliseum, and the swimming was at the 32 LA Olympics pool at USC also adjacent to the Coliseum. Seeing Carl Lewis, and Edwin Moses win so many Golds was a blast.. I sat right behind ABC sportscaster Donna Devarona for one of the days of Track and field!

I shoulda said due west of Catalina, there is nothing but ocean (for 1000's of miles). Me thinks Santa Barbara Island is just south (or is it just north) of Catalina.
I can't sing a note, but I know the lyrics of 100's of songs and can play the piana.

Oops My mistake too... due west of Catalina is San Nicolas Island where the Naval Air station is... Yes San Clemente is south east of Catalina.... I used to do Practice Instrument flights To San Nicolas Island. and they would practice ADIZ intercepts on us as we flew near the Island. It was cool to see 2 F18's or previous to that F14's fly along side and wing wag. We would intentionally fly really slow to **** them off!
Personally, I'd rather see 2 Beech Staggerwings flyin' around out there with Paul Mantz and Pancho Barnes as the pilots. I'd settle for a coupla F4U's, but only if "Pappy" Boyington was flyin' one a them.
'Course, they're all as dead as Julius Caesar, but one can dream.

I am with ya on that Bill!
I was flying out at Edwards to go to the annual Airshow there many years ago, just after we landed, Chuck Yeager touched down in his P51... the place went nuts.. I got to chat with him on the flight line, and he was really cool chatting with my son, who was 15 or 16 at the time.

That was taken during filming of "Flight Of The Phoenix" it was to be part of either the take off sequence or landing sequence, which I don't recall now! I do remember seeing this video in flight school!
