It's off my 84 F150 with a 6 cylinder. I found a really nice one and couldn't resist replacing it. I'll do some digging tonight and let you know what I find.
My headlight shaft sometimes behaves similarly; I remove it and twist it maybe 1/3rd of the way or so and re-insert and I can get it to snap in eventually.
The proper way to remove the **** and shaft from the headlamp switch is as follows...
1: Pull the **** and turn the headlights full on.
2: Reach up and press the release button on the switch.
3: Pull the **** and shaft loose from the switch.
4: Gently push the **** and shaft back in to turn the headlamps off.
5: Remove the **** and shaft.
To install:
1: push the **** and shaft and lock it into position with a sharp pushing movement.
If you do it in any other way, it can put the release mechanisim into a bind and cause the problems you two are having.
A bit of white lithium grease on the end of the shaft, may help an older switch too.

I finally got it back in. I unscrewed the bolt that was holding the switch to the dash piece and was able to get it back in by twisting the white gear looking piece of it around in small increments until it took it. Then, I released it like you said, reinstalled the bolt to secure it to the dash and everything went back together like a champ.
