Once again Ronin is right. You are comparing apples to oranges. First you have what is called a smart transmission so any change in HP or torque affects the way it shifts. Without proper tuning/learning you might experience banging during towing especially downshifting on long upgrades. My advice is get a tuner that experienced folks on here use and recommend. I made a similar mistake when I started in that I only deleted the DPF. All was good for 2000 miles and then the truck stopped blowing smoke at WOT and was losing some of its power. one of those just didn't feel right things. I finally deleted the CAT/DOC and all was well. Everyone on here said to do both from the get go but I cheapped out. Live and learn. The collective knowledge on these forums is astounding and most of it comes from experience. Sorry for rambling but wanted to let you know that you cannot get better advice. JMO

Oops just so all know black smoke was not my goal it was just an indication something was not right with the truck.

You don't think that adding 25% more torque doesn't put additional stress on the transmission? Particularly when the TCM may not even be retuned (best to be sure about that and check with Edge, who I'm sure will jump right on your email, first thing this AM... )? And especially considering the fact that you're towing at or near, maybe even over capacity...?! Yeah right...

Why is the original owner selling it? Sold the truck and looking to get a couple of bucks back or stepping up to a real tuner, if you know...

Payroll huh? Since you mentioned me by name in your first post you don't have to be Dick Tracy to put those two comments together. That was just straight up plain disrespectful, no two ways about it. I've been on this forum for over 5 years and alluding that I'm some shill for anyone is way out of line. You don't like my advice, don't take it, you obviously have your mind already made up and are just looking for some validation from someone...anyone it seems, but excluded me by name 'cause you already knew what was coming. You think there's a reason why no one's jumped on your bandwagon yet?

Try throwing a post like this up on some of the other forums and you'll get yourself laughed right out the front door. There's a reason for that, and I'll repeat it with an additional caveat; canned tunes/tuners are junk and the people that buy them typically don't know any better and are just falling for those super sexy full color ads in Diesel Power magazine.

$25 for an "upgrade"?! I can't be the only person that actually laughed out loud when I read that.

I guarantee that ANY tow tune (or any tune for that matter) from ANY of the custom tuners will run cooler EGTs and transmission temperature, shift smoother, have lower cylinder pressures and get better mileage on top of it than you'll get with that garbage generic/canned tune from Edge, Superchips, ad infinitum, ad nauseum...

PT Barnum was right, there's one born every minute, good luck with your "attractively priced" Edge with $25 "custom tune" on your $60K+ truck, you're gonna need it...
Well sir, I can trump that. I've been on here for 10 years and I pay for the privledge. Your post are well known to me for their passion and directness. They are not known for your tact or brevity. I knew based on previous posts what your answer would be before I even asked the question, so I excluded you by name. Given the robustness of your prior posts I didn't think you would be offended. My bad, I didn't realize you were so sensitive, I'm sorry, I won't do that again.

I did not say you were on the payroll. I include you in the "vigorously defending their decision" category. I am pleased that you answered my question about the number 1 tune, your answer makes sense, thank you. If I buy the Edge I will be careful about it. Now, if you would care to answer the same question about the number 0 (stock) tune I would be grateful.

You are right, I am looking for some support for my lean toward trying the Edge. You're also right that I'm not finding much. However, only you have gone off on me like you are my first sergeant. You are not. The owner of the Edge claims he is upgrading so he can remove the EGR, which of course he can't do with the Edge. As I said above, he is selling and I factor that in to my thinking. As for the $25 reprogram, I haven't read the site carefully as I just became aware of it. I thought I made that clear.

Now lets talk about the sucker comment. I'm a pretty experienced guy and not easily influenced by salesmanship or brash insulting dialog. I view Spartan and H&S like I do cable TV. To get the tune(s) I need or want I would have to buy a bunch that I don't want or need. They justify the cost by researching all those tunes and bundling them, and while I don't want to knock their marketing program neither do I need the other tunes. As I've said since the original post on this thread all I want is a stock truck with the DPF deleted. I will never ever watch the food channel and I will never ever use the 350HP tune. It just ain't gonna happen. And because it takes 20 minutes or so to change tunes I'm betting that very few Spartan users change that often. So, like cable TV they have a bunch of channels they bought so they could use one or two. I on the other hand want to pay a lower price for 1 stock and one mild tune and that makes me a sucker in your eyes. Well, OK.

I know this is very long but I felt I needed to defend myself. To me the true value of this forum is that a lot of people can participate in an open discussion and learn from each other. I learned years ago in my career that a group decision will always be superior to any individual decision. I intend to keep on participating and learning. Sometimes I'm the learner, sometimes I'm the teacher. Again, I'm sorry about offending you, it was not my my intent to do so.

On edit: This is my final post on this thread so have at me. I'm outta here.

Not sensitive, just didn't appreciate the insinuation that I was on ANYONE'S payroll, you cleared that up so apology accepted...

Your cable TV comparison is a fair one, my only caution is the slippery slope that modding can sometimes take, which more often than not results in spending your hard earned money twice...not that I've EVER done that myself...

At your tow load levels running a level 0 tune with just the DPF deleted out of an abundance of caution would be an excellent idea. You can take it one step forward and significantly reduce your EGTs with an intercooler charge pipe like I wrote up a piece about HERE. The CCV mod is just icing on that particular cake. Neither one of those mods are going to add power, just make your motor run better, which is something that I think all of us would prefer, regardless of the power level we may or may not be tuned to!
