Edge Eveloution and DPF Delete
I just bought the truck a week ago with 70,000kms on it. When I got the truck it was set on level 3 and was smoking blue REALY bad!! So I turned the tuner back to stock setting and the blue smoke went away.
I've bin doing some reading on here and what Im learning is that the Edge Evolution Race tuner is not compatible with the DPF delete?? So I phoned Edge and they won't support you in any way with the tuner because of a law suit with the DOT. They said if I return the tuner they will give me a full refund to me, which I never payed for anyway, cause it came with my truck.
My local truck performance shop tells me the only tuner on the market right now that is compatible with the DPF delete is the H&S tuner? Is this correct??
I'm scared to use my Edge Evolution tuner cause it makes my truck smoke blue really bad and I also read that the Edge is hard on transmissions?? Is this true??
My next question is, can I unplug the Edge tuner altogether with the DPF delete still done? My local truck performance shop said I can't and that it would put my truck into limp mode! So I tried it! I unplugged the tuner and nothing came up while driving it, no limp mode.
So why is my Edge Tuner making my motor smoke blue and should I get the money back from it and buy an H&S programmer??
Thanks for anyone's help!!
I have to use a tuner in conjuction with removing the DPF otherwise I will be in eternal regen??
Is this why my truck smokes black and my oil smells like diesel??
Keep in mind I also set the Edge back to stock. Does this mean its in eternal regen??
I assume the DPF is removed from the truck, is it?
If you have the race evolution you should be able to get to the menu and it will ask you if the DPF is deleted, or if you want to delete, I forget which way it reads. The street version will not have that.
If you have the DPF deleted and you have reprogramed the Edge back to stock your truck will be in regen and smoking like crazy and smelling like diesel is being poured into the exhaust because it is. I learned this the hard way. I tried it. If the DPF is off the truck the evo must be on one of the settings 1 2 or 3.
I'm not sure I remember all the settings but it seems that level 1 was about 35 HP and a bit of torque but not a lot. Try that setting and see if the truck runs OK.
If the DPF is gone and you go to the Edge menu and set up for level 1, DPF delete the truck should run nicely. It may take a few minutes to burn the fuel out of the exhaust.
Another thing you can try is go on the Edge site and see if you can get a read on the model number of your Edge, the race tuner has a different model number from the street tuner. It's on the back of the Edge.
My Edge worked fine, I used it for 15 or 20 thousand miles. I went to the H&S because it tunes the tranny.
Edge and the tranny. As best I could tell the Edge that was tearing up the trannys in the 6.0L was the Juice with Attitude. you can read all about it on the 6.0L Forum.
However, I had some tranny problems. As they were just starting I went to the H&S just in case. My tranny is being rebuilt and beefed up right now and the tech tells me there is no way the Edge caused the problem.
Hope this helps and I wish I could give you more info but I just can't remember the model number of the Edge "race". Let us know how you make out.
OK, I just went to one of the speed shops that is still selling Edge tuners. The the Edge "race" tuners for ford are models 85700 and 85600. These are newer than the one I had they are the CTS and CS versions and have a very nice color display. Mine was analog black on grey. I'll look around and see if I can find it in my records.
Yes my DPF is gone and yes I have the race version.
So I put it back on level 1 and black and blue smoke cleared up!! Any reason why it was smoking blue on level 3??
I also called edge and they are recalling all these programmers, they said they would give me a full refund for the programmer when I send it back. I'm thinking I should send it back and take the $800 and go buy an H&S because apparently it's easier on your transmission. Your thoughts on this?
Having owned both The H&S and the Edge I would say that for what I do, just drive and tow.. not looking for any drag races, there isn't much difference in them. But I'm having my tranny rebuilt now and even though the rebuilder says the tuners have nothing to do with the solenoid failure, I just sort of wonder.
There are a few other options out there the most attractive of which is the Spartan. For some reason (gee I wonder what it could be) the EPA seems to have left them alone and as far as I know they are doing business right out in the open. You can find them at Spartan.com or something close to that. Of course now that they have very little competition their price is way up too. The Spartans were highly thought of on this forum and you can find a lot of info on here if you will search for Spartan.
Another option is to skip the Edge buy back and get an H&S or Spartan and then sell the Edge on Craigs list or Ebay. Should bring $1000 or more if the H&S and Spartan are selling for what I think they are. I sold my edge before they announced the settlement and recall. I was down in florida and put it on the fort myers craigs list. Some guy from pittsburg bought it. Again good luck.
If you choose to keep the Edge I would just say that when I talked with their customer service they recommended setting 2 to tow. I drove on setting one and tried towing on 2 once. I couldn't tell a lot of difference from towing on 1 so I just stayed on 1.
Hope all this helps you and let us know how you make out. You may find some H&S tuners on ebay or at some of the speed shops, just google DPS delete.
Oh yeah, the blue smoke on level 3, blue smoke usually means burning oil. But I can't think of why it would burn oil on one level and not another. This response will bump you back to the top and some of the experts may have an answer. Anything I said would just be a guess.
