Last night I got my gears put in the ol 67. Hopefully gain me some mpg for a while. Got the whole 9" minus brakes for $90. It's a wonderful difference, and wish I had done that after I bought the truck 5 years ago. They're 2.75's, and the old ones were 3.55's. I almost could have gone with a 2.50, but those arent so easy to find anymore. It likes the highway speeds now, and not doggy like I was expecting. Still plenty peppy.
Taller gears help. In my old 73 I had the taller gears with a 460 and automatic trans and got 12 MPG. In my 74, with 460 and 4 speed with 4:10s I get probably 10 mpg at highway speeds. Nice wood truck though. Can yank old growth Jeffery Pine trees over with that sucker.
One caveat, it seems that taller gears work well to save fuel as long as there is enough displacement. An undersized engine seems to have adverse affects with tall gears, in my experience anyway. But I'm sure you know that.
I moved to Mendo County from Shasta County in '85, lived in Boonville for about 4 years then moved to Ukiah, then back to Boonville after three years. Moved over here to Lake County in about '98 and been here pretty much ever since.
Dan, when are we gong to get together and play guitar around the campfire again? I really enjoyed that.
Man, I guess I've been away for a while. You old salty dog... Garrrr.

The 300 isnt really undersized for this. It's making power at a real low rpm, so it really likes the new gears. Plus, my tires are stock size 235's. It's way better this way, vs running a taller tire. I got 11mpg with the 3.55's, and hope it goes up for the highway. I wont know exact mpg until my Oregon trip in 3 weeks.
I'm hunkering down up here in the mountains. Carson Valley Days is going on down in the valley today, live music, carnival, parade... And lots and lots of people. Good day to stay home IMO.

Wet tee shirt contest! (just kidding)
I was the 22nd caller on the Channel 2 morning news contest.
I liked the first answer, of course...
I used to call in on those radio and tv station contests but never won so I quit bothering with it. Glad to see that people really do win and these call-in contests aren't just a hoax. Awesome that you were the big winner! Congrats!
I'm trying Tim... Tomorrow I am scheduled to go play my guitar at the church so I thought today I would just kinda hang around and drink a few beers on my deck under the pines. Well, it didn't work out that way. Dog gone pager went off for VFD call, bicyclist took a digger on Monitor Pass. (steep and windy). Anyway, I'm a sucker for duty so I ran down to the fire house and responded up there. Thought it would be a short trip up, bandage the guy up then head back home for those cold beers in the fridge.... NOPE, not a chance. The guy was banged up pretty bad so had to package the sucker up and load him on a helicopter. Then, after I was done and on the way home, another call... Dispatch knew I was out there so couldn't pretend like I didn't hear it. I got diverted to a single vehicle rollover. Arrrg! So I headed right past the turn off to my house to find an elderly couple upside down and trapped in their minivan. Both had history of heart problems, among many other ailments. It turned into a major issue to extricate them. Oh well, I finally got home a couple of hours ago and pounded down a few brews but I've got to cut it short so I can be of sound mind to play my guitar tomorrow. So much for my relaxing and uneventful weekend. Maybe I'll be able to BBQ tomorrow afternoon when I get back home from town. We'll see.
This weekend is hauling @$$, right on by. Probably be over before I know it, arrrg. Thanks for the well wishes though. Hopefully next weekend.
Don't let me fool you. I'm actually having withdrawals from retirement from my last job as Firefighter... So even though you hear me bitching about running around with red lights on, I'm actually having fun. Just wish they'd let me bring a twelve pack on the calls... (just kidding)
How's the fires going down there in the Southwest? You really should come up this way and visit with us Northern Cal and Northern Nevada folks. Take a break from all that smoke down there... Hope all is well for you and your family.
