Man -- have things changed!! It seems like only yesterday that a good 8 track player and a set of Jensens were all I needed.
Yep, the $7 line converters I bought 20 years ago from Audio Express (and still have in my tool box) just aren't going to cut it anymore. Then again, they worked great for my Pioneer tape deck running some Lanzar 10" subs in my '78 Bronco...
Got my speakers installed yesterday. Just wanted to add that I did not need to remove the rear seat belt attachment to gain access to the rear speakers. The bottom panel will come off but I would recommend removing the rear door sill first, then pull back the door seal just enough to clear the bottom rear plastic panel, then gingerly pull the bottom rear panel out, starting from the top. You will not be able to fully take out that bottom panel, you are just looking to pull it away enough to gain access to the speaker.
And BTW, here is a cell phone pic of the new vs Ford OEM speaker (on right). Everyone is right, the OEM speaker is pathetic and when listened to directly, is very muddy sounding. The sound out of the new speakers has MUCH MORE clarity.
Just picked up two pair of Infinity 680.9 cs (2 ohm) component speaker sets for my upgrade scheduled for July 13.
The Infinity's look like a decent-sounding, mid-priced speaker. Had Infinity Kappa II's in my Jeep, and liked them well enough.
One time I dropped almost a grand on a pair of Focal speakers, and actually liked them less. Blew them up in short order too.
Looking at the Focal Solid4 amp (100 watts x 4 at 2 ohms) to power them. Would rather have a Zapco, but too rich for me.
Also considering the 15" Kicker Solo-baric sub in a custom enclosure behind the center console, with the Kicker Warhorse 10,000 watt amp. Had a pair of 12" Kickers in the Jeep, and they sounded nice.
Should be a noticeable upgrade to the cheapo factory system, but not too excessive or esoteric for a simple work truck.
May do the speakers first/sub later. Will post my opinion afterwards...
Debated long which to do first: Spartan tunes or audio. Decided to give aftermarket more time to fine-tune tuner performance aspects before I drop the $3K.
You can get them a bit cheaper on ebay which is where I'll buy them, but Crutchfield gives you the wiring adapter and install stuff for your specific vehicle for free (wiring adapters are around $8 online) According to Crutchfield, the rears will accept 6X8 same as the fronts.
Bigziff,
Thanks for the info and guidance on install. I went to Amazon, got 4 of these and connectors shipped to my door for ~$125. Now waiting for Jimmy Jammers and I will tackle both upgrades at same time...

Would you mind posting pictures of the finished product? I always do car audio installs myself because it's a small hobby of mine. I'm still not sure how I would get the aftermarket tweeters in the factory location for the fronts.
I picked up a pair of Infinity Kappa coaxials from EBay. They were $75.00 a pair. Two questions; what is the polarity of the wires feeding the speakers? There is a white wire and a white with stripe. Which is pos and neg? Second question; the new speakers have the mid and tweeter in one. Should I be disconnecting the existing tweeter or just leave it? Will it screw up the imaging and the impedance? Thanks.
Ok, here's the update. Picked up one pair of Infinity Kappa 689.2 2 ways on EBay for $75. Replaced the existing front door speakers this afternoon and the results are outstanding. I can't believe how much music I have been missing. The install took all of 30 mins. for both front doors. Easy as pie. Will definitely be doing the back seat next.
The white wire with stripe is neg and the white is pos.
I used the T connector and wrapped versus spending the extra 24 for Crutchfields connectors.
Left the 3db drop on the Infinity tweeters and connected the stock tweeters as well. Results were a bit bright but manageable by dropping the treble one notch.

The Infinity Kappa's are a 2 way speaker with tweeters and mid bass in one. Normally would have disconnected the existing tweeter but decided to leave it in place and try it. I will be trying it without the existing tweeter in a few days to compare. I was concerned with the impact on impedance leaving the existing tweeter in place but the draw on a tweeter is very low.
just ordered some Infinity Reference 6832cf, seem to have decent reviews and can't beat the price on ebay. now i just got to wait for about three weeks till i get home to install them...SOB!!! Im not looking for high end performance, just something better than stock
