Not sure how similar it is to previous years.
Premium sound system has nine speakers:

4 x tweeters
4 x mids
1 x 8" sub

The sub (at least in the crew cab) is located behind the rear seat between the jack and the tire changing tools.

Hope this helps.

i also agree that the factory speakers are very crappy. im not a kid anymore that wants a bunch of subs, and for it to becrazy loud but i still like to crank it up to a good song. I will be replaceing the factory speakers soon. as far as the factory cd player/radio, think i am going to be forced to keep it because i like the sync, unless the after market has figured out how to keep all the sync features working with an after market radio

Awesome, thanks Brian! (Brian is a good name, since we share it!)

I would assume the sub is powered? (no separate amp for sub + speakers)

This will help me make a plan of attack. I want to order a Lariat but it's a bummer we have to overhaul the "premium" sound system in a $60k truck. Gives me a while to think about it, probably not until 2012 or 2013.

How is anybody fixing the problem with the rear speakers also plugging up the rear tweeters? I just left the tweeters disconnected for now. Can I just splice in the wire and get the same thing I need for the tweeter? Or did that speaker filter out the highs just for the tweeter?

Did your new speakers have a component setup (included tweeters and crossovers) or was it a full range speaker (no tweeters or x-overs) pair?

Personally I would have got a pair of component speakers to replace the sock tweeters. If you just got full range speakers, then I would leave the factory tweeters disconnected (might be too powerful on the highs). Just my 2 cents.....

are component speakers hard to hook up? it looked like there was a seprate box to hook up with? Also, will the tweeters just fit in the stock location?

I can only speak for myself, but I don't think that component speakers are any more difficult to hook up than full range speakers. It just takes a bit more time. And there is a separate box to install for each speaker location, which are called crossovers. A crossover separates the high & mid rage frequencies, one crossover for each speaker location. The highs are sent to the tweeter and the mids are sent to the woofer (which is the component located in the stock 6x8 loction, not to be confused with a subwoofer). As to the tweeters fitting in the stock location, probably not. In fact I don't even know what the stock location for tweeters in these trucks are. Can't find them on the pictures I looked at. So more than likely you will have to do some drilling.

When I installed my Kicker components in my '04 Colorado, I had to cut out the factory tweeter grille and widen the hole for the new tweeters. I can show you pictures if you would like.

You can get them a bit cheaper on ebay which is where I'll buy them, but Crutchfield gives you the wiring adapter and install stuff for your specific vehicle for free (wiring adapters are around $8 online) According to Crutchfield, the rears will accept 6X8 same as the fronts.
Thanks for the info about the speakers. Ordered a 2 pair set this morning off of eBay from a reputable dealer at a significant savings from Crutchfield. Can't wait. Like you, I'm not so concerned about huge sound out of the truck, just want good clarity and good sound at a reasonable price and ease of install.

The sub is powered with an amp that is built into the sub enclosure. I dont remember the wattage but it's something in the range of 50 watts.

I plan to reuse the sub enclosure but drop in an Alto Falstaff shallow mount 8" sub and power it with a Litebox 1 amp running 400 watts @ 4 ohms. Don't know if the factory enclosure will be rigid enough, but I thought I'd give it a try before going with a custom enclosure.

As far as reusing the stock rear tweeter locations, the stock locations are so far off axis from the mids that, IMHO, dropping in a good aftermarket tweet would be a waste. I'm probably just going to add a good set of coaxes in the rear, or if I go with comps, I will put the tweeters closer to mid woofers. The rear speakers are just for fill anyway. I'll just leave the stock tweeters in place, but disconnected.

My $0.02.

Brian

I suppose you have to take out the rear seats to get to the sub enclosure. I might try that too. Although I'd really like to put in a 10" sub instead of the 8" stock.
And yes, I left my tweeters disconnected too in the back when I put the coaxes in the rear of my crew cab. The sound is SO much better for just $200 worth of speakers and half hour of time.

i just have an XLT truck with the CD/MP3 sync deck in it.. does anyone know if the stock deck has pre-outs for an amp? when i had my old 1990 F250 i had a powered 8" sub which was plenty good enough.. kept the sub when i sold the old truck.. just wondering if it is possible to install it in the 2011, without replacing the deck..most likely it isn't since i've never seen a stock deck with pre-outs..but I can hope right?
and i do agree the speakers in these trucks are WEAK! even with the stock stereo they start to sound like garbage when you crank it up..

it's not the 80's anymore Ford. paper cones and glue don't cut it.

Nope....you'll need a line level converter or an amp with speaker level inputs.

PAC makes (or at least I thought they made) a line level converter with RCA outputs. Can't find it for the life of me.

I was going to go with the Audio Control LCQ-1 but since it's not available, the LC6i is getting installed (Thursday). Clean Sweep is another option for converters.

My speaker box showed up yesterday, ordered a 13" enclosure (for a JL 13TW5) and have a JL HD900/5 getting installed as well.

Man -- have things changed!! It seems like only yesterday that a good 8 track player and a set of Jensens were all I needed.
