I would want the ability to flick the lights on from the driver's seat, while driving, regardless of forward or reverse.
I guess you could run a 12v hot lead to them with a switch for that lead somewhere in the cab right. Like to an upfitter?
With a little work, anything can be done. It would be nice to get tailgaters to back off.

No kidding...and a light setup is probably more "legal" than my 12-gauge sticking out the sliding rear window!

Your best bet is to just let the crazy bastage get by Ya.
