Hi all,
I checked with Ford about my '01 F250, and was told mine wasn't due for the CPS update. I am thinking of buying one for a spare since most of you all think it is a good idea.
Which is the correct color for the updated one?
Part number?

The part number of the updated one is F7TZ-12K073-B Order it from Parts Guy Ed.com for $16.70 to save yourself some money.
Like Franko mentioned the Black CPS is what most of us run to improve the idle. It is the original style one, and as long as you have a spare, there should be no worries running it.
If you are curious to why, take a look at my page for which CPS and why?

What did Ford mean by "Wasn't due for the CPS update" All our year trucks 99-03 or even before and beyond called for the recall?? Unless your truck was already taken care of with a new CPS I'd question those remarks, at the very least your owed an updated CPS. I got a black CPS from Clay and its been fine for 40,000 estimated miles now.
Thanks to all three of you, excellent info wood. The service writer just said nothing showed up being required or being done, which by my understanding was strange. I am going to a different dealer next week to get a couple of things (gives me a discount) and will check in person.
Is there a shim procedure for these? Or just bolt in and go.
It's a bolt on and go. It's a good idea to use some di-electric grease around the connector when you plug it back in to help keep the water out.
And for the record, the color of the CPS only matters when it's from Ford or International. A black one from the local parts store is worse than the gray one from Ford.
My 01 and Dads 00 had two recalls in the last couple of years for cps. We only took it in the first time. After the the first recall i ordered two black internationals from Clay. Both of our trucks have been running great on them. We ignored the second recall and also ignored the Speed control recall. Did that ourselves also.
I crawled under there and cleaned all the excess oil and such and I have a gray one!
So, guess it was taken care of at one point. For now I might just buy an extra gray one.
Hard to beat the price, too many other things on my short list for now.
Thanks all.
Dan, Careful with the cruise control recall. I have a salesman who calls on me that lost his house because his F150 caught fire in his garage from the cruise control. He had just received his recall notice and had not taken it in yet. His insurance investigator and Ford confirmed this.
