Shift Solenoid

I have a 00' Ranger 2wd 3.0. Tranny is missing shifts from 1st to 2nd. It will shift if I let off the gas for a few seconds. Will not shift back down inot first without disengaging the tranny. Dealership says valve body is shot, and entire tranny needs to be replaced! Had a friend of a friend scan the tranny and he thinks it's a shift solenoid. Any thoughts on this/ Any input would be helpful.

Shift Solenoid

Welcome to FTE!!!

I'm not really into trannies but I'm sure you will get some good answers and you could also try asking on our tranny fourm.

Shift Solenoid

Ken,

I have the exact same problem with '00 Ranger, 4R44E transmission. No second gear shift. Transmission shifts 1-1-3-4. I've been to three transmission shops. All say the tranny needs to be replaced. What a bunch of bull! I had one shop run the computer diagnostics. From this analysis, I was able to figure out that the shift solenoid (SSB) is the problem! I got trouble codes P0755 (SS2 solenoid circuit failure) and code P1756 (SS2 solenoid failure). The cause of the failure is either: 1. wiring or connector problems in the solenoid electrical circuit, 2. defective shift solenoid B, or 3. defective powertrain control module (PCM). I would also try resetting the PCM.

Shift Solenoid

Well, I replaced the shift solenoid giving the trouble code, but I still have the same problem. Tranny sticks in 1st too long. When I get on the throttle fairly heavy it winds up to the rev limiter and won't shift until I let off. When I dropped the tranny pan there weren't any chunks of metal, which would lead me to believe that the problem still is electrical. I'm thinking maybe PCM or wiring to PCM? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated since the dealer wants a mere $2500 to "fix" my truck.
