Upgrading from toploader to 5 speed?
What i got: 1983 f100 4.9(built)
I currently have a toploader 3spd w/od(4speed) and recently put 3.55 gears in my rear. Now the odrive revs out and max speed looks to be about 50-55mph.
Is there a T5 that will fit my truck. There are a lot of T5's out there that people are pulling out of mustangs. Will these fit my truck. I have done some reading and seem to know what years and such to be looking for but not sure if they will work.
Are there any other 5speeds other than the t5 that would work for me?
Thanks for everything...

Bit of conflicting info there. Is you current transmission actually a Toploader (direct 4th) or an SROD overdrive trans?
If it is an SROD, switching to a 5 speed will do you no good, the final gear ratio will be nearly the same.
Though it sounds like you don't actually have an OD trans currently.

U are right. I must have a SROD. It doesn't feel like a strong tyranny even though a rebuild not so long ago. I spent a shoot load of money on the motor with all the Clifford parts recommended. I would like to find the tranny and gearing combo that works. Looks like u have smaller gears. . I am thinking that I might need to change the gears to say 3.08.
Thought that the extra gear would make the drive better when speaking of finding a t5 to replace the SROD.
On another note. Got any tricks to seal the valve cover gasket. Can't get mine to stop leaking.
It's nice to see someone else that is into their 300.

It's an SROD Single Rail Over Drive. I rebuilt mine because bolt up options were limited. It's good for commuting, I get great mileage. Optons are a ZF5 which I considered, but it's hydraulic clutch and would ideally require a donor vehicle, 87 to 91 F250 but pedal assembley from 86 or earlier hydraulic set up, not to mention firewall reinforcement. You can possibly go for a 5 litre mustang T5, a few differing opinions on that swap, but the shifter won't line up. A good old fashioned "real" toploader wide ratio might be the best option, but they aint cheap and again, shifter won't line up, especially if you have a bench seat. T18 or T19 are other non hydraulic options, but they are really 3 speeds in every day useage.

Do you have a tachometer or does it just sound wound up @ 50-55 mph? Perhaps the OD transmission has been replaced with a non-OD unit [sometime before you got it]?
My son's 1984 4.9L with manual OD and 3.55 gears is just starting to feel a little tight @ 70 mph, but has more to offer. My 1986 4.9L with manual OD and 3.08 gears is quite relaxed @ 70 mph [2000 RPM's].
