I brought my toploader 4spd to my machinist to have it rebuilt, and he informed me that I was mistaken and actually have the 3spd with overdrive. Obviously I am very disheartened. The trans lives behind a '66 428 in a shortbed F100.
So, I'm debating selling the 3spd and tracking down a true toploader 4spd. My main complaint has always been the drop in power between 2 and 3 gear (which makes sense now!). Is this a dumb idea- should I just leave well enough alone? It has lived there so far, bolts up to the engine and driveshaft, and the shifter fits the hole in the floor?
What kind of compatibility issues would I encounter if I did find a toploader? Would the shifter be in the correct position? I'd also need to make sure the input shaft was the same and the output shaft matched.
Here is some info on the imposter: Toploader Imposters
if you want to verify. From everything I've read/heard, I can't imagine it holding up to a big block.
