alright so i just got my tranny rebuilt and the guy who did it for me hooked me up with a triple lock converter cuz the old one was junk..and come to find out when i get it home my flywheel/flexplate is a 4 stud mounting and the new triple lock is a 6 stud,,,so what should i di here?
its for my 89 four door bronco, idi non turbo, with the e4od.
That's a nice looking conversion you got there. You'll find a lot very knowledgeable guys on here that will be able to help you with anything you need. That being said, I'm not too sure about the E4ODs, but he may have given you a heavy duty converter. In that case you can probably find a new flywheel at the parts store. A little salty, I know, but would you rather the trans last or go back to the stock converter?
id like to us ethe triple lock cuz they are really good and help alot on power and they are alot more sloid and yesi am i just got the truck recently the guy i got it from "obviously" didnt know how to take care of it cuz i had it for about two days and the tranny went out every possition but N went forward...it was horrilbe i know they guy who rebuilt it for me well and i went up there through out the rebuild and all the internals the gears all ate up the clutchs were welded together from not having fluid it it was a mess
The only reason I knew were in IN is I saw that truck for sale online a few weeks back.
If the trans was that shot I certainly hope you didn't pay what he was asking then lol!
You'll probably be able to keep the TC you have if you can find an HD flywheel. I'm not sure of the best place to find it myself but if you head to the vendor section you should be able to find someone who does.
The six stud won't work and I'm betting your flywheel and flexplate setup use the two piece deal with a heavy cast iron flywheel and the stamped steel plate on the back. This would make redrilling everything for the six stud much harder than on the later 1992 and up style flexplate.
Obviously, you had no way to use the torque converter so your builder should have no problem offering a refund on it. I made the point of asking for a 4 stud converter when I had my tripple clutch unit made and they were able to give me one like that.
Otherwise, you could try and find a machine shop that can redrill your flywheel and flexplate setup for a six stud. I would personally avoid this option since its riskier and the machinist needs to be able to test the balance after its done.
All IDIs used a 4 stud converter from 1983 to 1994.
