Having my tranny done with in the next few weeks the shops around here all install billet single lock converters from precision they say that they quit putting in the triple locks anyone know if they are not needed? I wanted the bts but couldnt spend the money.
Using a triple disk TCC is analogous to using 3 pipe wrenches to tighten a pipe fitting. If you apply an equal FORCE to each equal LENGTH wrench handle then each wrench applies an independent TQ=FORCExLENGTH to the pipe and in principle you can apply up to 3 times more TQ to the pipe using 3 wrenches than you can with only one. However if you can apply enough TQ with one wrench to tighten a pipe fitting without the wrench slipping then using more than one wrench is overkill and provides no additional benefit.
A triple disk TCC doesn't engage and disengage as smoothly as a single disk TCC does so there's some drivability issues involved with using a triple disk TCC. If you need a triple disk TCC to get the job done then you need to get one but just getting one for the heck of it has some down side and provides no additional benefit.
FYI... All the Ford replacement TC's are now tripple... there is a reason for this. Its more about the converters shell then the disks anyway. I could make a 6 disk TC and slap a stamped steel cover on it, would last about 100 miles...
In principle you could use 3 disks and reduce the clutch pressure to 1/3 of its previous value which would eliminate the issue of budging cases and you'd still have the same TQ rating as before. It would be like reducing the FORCE on each of 3 wrench handles to 1/3 of the FORCE on a single wrench handle and using 3 wrenches to apply the same TQ to the pipe as one wrench would apply using the full FORCE on one handle.
sorry for the confusion I talked to the manufacturer of the tc and they said they dont make the triple lock anymore instead it is a 5 disc 2 steel and 3 something else in a billet housing I guess since they said that their triple was obsolete I just assumed it was a single. So if it is not a single or a triple what do ya call it
