2.9l Collapsed Lift,
2.9l Collapsed Lift,
Hi all I'm new here so please bare with me. This is my story in short, I found on craigs-list a 2.9L I heard it run, very nice sounding so i bought it. Opon switching out my old motor I put in new timing gears, valve cover and oil pan gaskets... Keep in mind I had the motor turned over to install the oil pan gasket. When I finely got everything switched over and the old motor pulled out and the new one installed. I had a realy loud noise I beleave lifters / lifter when i started it. Most of the time the noise goes away and is gone. But then other times it comes back for a few mins, then gone again.... My question is, could i have drained the oil out of one or more of the lifters when it was upside down.... and should i worry about it hurting something else?.. Is it collapsed and won't hold any presure?? or??? Please help if you can. Im not sure if I could find my way back here, so please e-mail me at pikachutoyy@yahoo.com Thanks for taking the time to help.
David, ps the craigs list motor has 160k and old one had 245k.

Welcome to FTE.
Kinda sounds like a sticking lifter.
Maybe try one of the new SN/GF-5 crank case lubes, or maybe a dose of Marvel Oil for a few hundred miles, or until it stops acting out, If you found the engine wasn't sludged up. If the engine was sludged up & you use the Marvel Oil, or SN/GF-5 recipe, you'll want to keep an eye on the oil filter & maybe change it after a few hundred miles, just in case it gets loaded up with debris the Marvel Oil or SN/GF-5 lube cleans out.
If it's just some varnish or gum causing a lifter to stick, the Marvel Oil, or the SN/GF-5 lube should get after it in a few hundred miles & begin to quiet it down.
The Marvel Oil treatment worked for me once on my old 78 3.3L Zypher. Stopped the intermittent sticking/collasped lifter in about 100 miles of driving, so I changed the oil & filter, end of problem, it never came back & I drove it until about 2 years ago.
