Hi all, I was tinking I know all about 300 inline engines but last weekend a found a problem simple but I couldn't fix.
My engine was having lifter noise every time I start engine, the sound is same as new lifter are installed and they are filling up, after a few minutes it disappears. As soon as engine is stoped, there was the noise produced by lifter loosing oil and collapsing under spring valve pressure.
Then I got a new lifter set and installed, I had checked also gap betwen Rocker and valve and it is fine but after engine start... SURPRISE!!! lifter noise still been present ! ! !
Up today there is no difference betwen old lifters and new lifters same problem... now I'm guessing
1° I had receive defective lifters???
2° 15W40 is too heavy oil???
3° Why lifters loose oil as soon as engine is stoped?? (Same as high milleage lifters...)
4° Will worth test using 10W30 oil???
Any help will be appreciated, I hate that ugly noise avery time I start my engine, sound like a very old truck
I wish I knew. A lot of folks have noticed the "lifter noise." My truck has been doing it for years, as you mentioned, right at startup. My 300 still runs strong, with no problems. Sorry, I don't have a fix for you, but the noise has never led to anything good or bad. I suppose it's an inherent characteristic with this particular motor.

Oil filters have an internal valve that is designed to prevent oil from draining backwards through the filter. If that valve leaks, the oil in the upper part of the engine will drain back through the filter and into the crank case when the engine is not running. If you have a problem with chattering lifters when the engine is first started, you may have a filter with a valve that leaks.
There are several good threads in the oil & lubrication forum on this site that speak to this problem. One of those threads has a URL link to a web site where oil filters were cut open and their internal construction was examined in an effort to determine if there are significant differences in the various brands of filters. I recommend that you read that article and develop you own conclusions about which filters may be best.
I had a persistent problem with valve/lifter chatter when the engine was first started in the morning. After looking at that web site, I replaced a Fram filter with a MotorCraft filter and the problem went completely away. I would be curious to know if others have the same results.
Well I have the opposite problem, when I first start it up there is no noise and as it warms up there is some noise, not excessive but more then I want. Maybe I should use thicker oil? Currently I am using 10w 30 with about 210k on the oddometer
Replace the Fram oil filter with a MotorCraft, Wix, or NAPA filter and let us know if the problem goes away.
Well, I'm using Fleetguard LF3313 filter, it has Drain Back valve, so it means most oil in filter return to oil pan after turn off, it could be causing some air to be trapped in lifters, BUT Why the lifters produce that noise as soon as engine is stoped? is same noise as lifter loosing oil while collapsing using special tool.

Yes this the typical problem caused by wear, switch to 15W40 or 20W50 oil
my truck has been making that noise for years. I asked my dad about it when i first got the truck from him and he said that he got the engine rebuilt a few years after he got it because of that noise and when he got it back it still made it! I wouldn't worry about it as long as it still runs good.
try using a different filter and some 10w-30. Also try running a quart of marvels mystery oil through it. Now i am not a fan if the mechanic in a can things, but MMO does work. I ran it for a 1000 miles in my chebbie and it cleaned out the engine really well.
Yea, Marvel cleaned mine so well, it made gunk get hung up in a lifter......tap, tap, tap.....all the way home! Now I just use Engine flush, and nice clean oil.
