Thinking about switching my '68 F-250 to an MSD Electronic Ignition? (Model MSD-6A) I was wondering if I needed to buy anything else other than that to swtich my truck over to electronic ignition. Easy to install? Pros and cons?
If the distributor you have right now is points you will have to change that out as welll.MSD sells a kit that has the box, coil, and distributor. As far as wireing it goes, its all labled and color coded and you cant really jack it up.If you dont fell like spendin that kindda money. The other option is a Pertronix Points conversion. From what iv read this is the best way to go.Alot of people on here have done this and are pleased with it.
Spend all the money you want, bless the economy, make yourself happy, but swapping to a Ford Duraspark or the Petronix will do the same thing for much less money.
the MSD ignition box is easy to install it has good instructions and not many wires to get confused over it will give you a hotter more accurate spark then any ford stock parts. will keep your plugs cleaner and less fouling as well do you plan on using a MSD distributor as well? i would if i was you get the blaster 2 coil billet distributor and ignition box. no real point in replacing one and not the rest wen you go to a performance oriented ignition system or you'd be better off staying stock imo
???What is that? And how much does that run?And what all does it intell?
The advance curve has been changed from stock. Duraspark distributors were used on smog equipped, relatively low performance engines. The re-curving makes the Duraspark more of a performance oriented distributor.
I got my Duraspark from Scotty at Reincarnation (Re in"Car"nation High Performance - Home) just click the link and then click on the "Services" tab for info and pricing. Scotty will custom curve your distributor to your specific combination. I like the MSD 6AL box because it has a rev limiter.
MSD, multiple spark discharge. meaning is fires several sparks up to about 3000 rpm with a 6a box. great stuff especially in cold weather. On the distributor their are some things msd offers compared to others. Phaseable rotor, meaning your can clock your rotor to where its pointing exactly on the contact compared to just pretty close. this isn't a real big deal in a oem application but if your turning some rpms it is. Helps prevent crossfire and coil saturation time in high rpm application. Not a big deal if using a vented distributor cap. but if running a non vented cap it is a big deal. On the timing of rotor to distributor cap you have to have a spare cap and drill a hole at #1 and once timing set you verify your rotor is pointing exactly on the contact with timing light. If before or after pull cap and loosen 2 screws and fine tune and your done. Been running this application for almost 15+ years when I learned about it. If your timing chain has some stretch this is a factor or using a after market cam and just another way to fine tune your engine a little more.

You've got me sold! I'm definitely going with the MSD Distributer, 6A Ignition box (instead of the 6Al, don't like the idea of a rev limiter), and the Blaster 2 high preformance coil.
I would rethink your decision on the 6a mad box i got the 6al2 for my charger and am glad it has a rev limiter there's been many times ive ran the motor up to higher RPM's then what I thought I had left and the rev limiter saved me or should I say my motor mine has an adjustable 2 stage rev limiter I can make it cut out at any rpm I want I suggest you get the 6al box this should be adjustable to whatever rpm you want it at and will save you the grief of blowing your motor

Hmm... Good point with that im not too familiar with this technology. are there any con's to having a rev-limiter?
No cons at all on a rev limiter only con there would be is that it won't allow some engines to reach peak HP but with an MSD setup you wont ever have to worry about that problem they can go to 10 or 11,000 Rpm which is almost double any stock engine is rated at turning
