Alright so probably dumb question but i am curious.
I really like the 72 front light/grill look. How hard is it to replace the other years front with that grill style? I cant imagine its that hard but i want to ask first. Also is there anywhere were you can get them or is it a donor type truck thing.
I really like the look but i cant find one in decent shape to start my project truck.
It's a direct bolt-on swap. You have to include the parking lights as the newer are a "wrap around" style mounted to the gravel shield. The grille shell has been reproduced, both in 1970 and 71-72 versions, but it is expensive. The only insert available for the 71-72 is the 1972.
Won't fit anything less than an F500...these trucks have an entirely different front end than F100/350's.
1967/72 F100/350 grilles will all interchange, but, as mentioned, 1970/72's have different parking lights, are mounted between the grille and the stone shield.
The U shaped "blind nuts" that attach the 1970/72 grille to the radiator support are 1970/72 only.
1970/72's use different headlamp doors, the headlamp buckets are also specific to 1970/72's (same as 1970 Mustang).
The radiator support that the grille attaches to and the stone shield are the same 1967/72.
Carpenter reproduced the 1970/72 grilles, but has been out of stock for several years as he could not get the correct aluminum.
Supposedly the grilles were going to be available again late last year, but when I checked recently, none were available.
I know I'm not suppose to sell in this forum and I'm not trying to sell it but I have a 1972 grill, inserts and the headlight trim covers from my project truck. I bought a complete new set of everything for my truck and will not need my old ones. I have several pictures if needed. It's as good or better than any used ones I have seen in the last six months on E-bay. PM if you want more information.
The 70 F100-350 grills did not have the marker lights in the grill. Also that also have round openings for the headlights and headlight buckets.
To me the grill also looks taller than the f100-350 grills. But the picture could be deceiving.
Bummage... Arrightee then. Thanks for your comments (#Dummy and 7283-F250).
There's an FTE-er in the Dentside forum with a lifted crewcab and it wears the >F350 fenders. It seemed to me that bump and dent cabs, regardless of series designation (as in F100,150,250, 350, 500 etc), wore the same hood for their series. Since he got the fenders to work and look correct, it appeared to me as doable. Yeah, the grill is taller but it appears the grills were simply stretched vertically to fit a taller truck and the headlights lowered to comply with state-mandated headlight heights. Second, I've seen bumpside grill shells on dentsides so I deduced that it might fit...
Below is the image that piqued my curiosity. It's out of the March 2011 issue of Circle Track magazine. The pic is of a rig at the dirt track located in Crossville, TN. In scale, the dentside cab looks the same proportions as my rig...
....I've got a 2WD 70 bumpside lined up to buy for $600 and was toying with the idea to lower it and use the large commercial fenders for a roadster look. The taller grill (with lower headlights) and commercial fenders would have made it appear wider and that much closer to the ground.
