January 2011 - General Chat Thread!
Last day of the work week!!!
Looking forward to the weekend...although mine is short as I fly out to LA on Sunday...
one word for the slick road Joe, studded snow tires!......or three.......

The only other scope I've ever bought is a Tasco 50mm for my muzzleloader. I really like it and it has always worked great, but after looking through the Loopy I couldn't believe the better quality of the glass. But the Tasco works fine too! I prefer open sights anyway since God has blessed me with such great vision......for now...........just hit 40.

BUT...holy cow...who took my ability to READ close up away!
... all my girls (wife and daughters) think it is absolutely hilarious that dad has to wear cheater readers to read anything
... I purchased a number of cheap reading glasses off ebay and have them strewn within arms reach all over the house, at my desk at work, in my backpack I travel with...the only place I always forget about them is at a restaurant when I'm "trying" to read a menu!!!...very comical actually!Thankfully I don't have any problems looking down a scope...that would a horrible turn of events!
I look back to a few years ago when I was a young lad of only 42...and my hunting and fishing partner who is a few years older than I (he just turned 62)...he is a Vietnam veteran Marine who saw a lot of action over there and just a great guy to have as a friend...but anyway...we were out crappie fishing on my boat and he's trying to thread the hook...he finally pulls out some glasses after I was giving him a ration of poop...well...look what I'll be eating come April/May this year when we're fishing!

50mm...HOLY COW...that's some light gathering optics my friend!!!...makes my 20mm one I have on my shotgun look like a soda straw!!!
Yeah...there is no replacement for quality optics...but for 100yards or less...I think the less expensive stuff works just fine...now if I were going to be out west shooting 400 yards type shots...you bet I would own a Loopy or a Zeiss!!!...for that kind of shooting or those guys that do that 1000 yard competition...man you need great glass!
Speaking of Zeiss...I specifically purchased my Sony H5 camera BECAUSE it has a Carl Zeiss glass lense...some of the cheaper cameras use...well cheaper optics...for all the photos I take...I wanted good glass...and Zeiss is one of the best out there.
Joe.

I was just thinkin' if I'm trying to give the kids an advantage with a good gun and a scope, and I was gonna spend that kind of money on a gun, then why not go crazy on a scope.
.......you are so right about the cheaper scopes doing great at under 100. I was also thinking, that I've had some very nice Winchesters and other pieces handed down to me from dad and grandpa. All I've been able to afford up until now, since my kids were born,(wife quite her career) was Rossi's and Mossberg's, (which are great guns!) and I wanted to buy some top quality stuff that will hold better value for future generations.....and my future grandkids won't think I'm so dang cheap either!

That's funny, last time I had my vision checked I was 20/15 too!
Seems I was told that you can sense light in darkness better than someone with 20/20....maybe I'm mistaken.....oh, and enjoy the crow Joe.
Yes, the 50 mm will cause you to know exactly when legal shooting hours start/stop. But the FOV is great!!

Seems I was told that you can sense light in darkness better than someone with 20/20....maybe I'm mistaken.....I tend to buy what I want...and you are right about OUR optics too...having had such great uncorrected eyesight my whole life...I can't imagine having to wear glasses or contacts...my long range vision and depth perception day or night is still phenomenal...but that dang reading...just wait for it Ben...just wait for it...I never thought it would find me either!

I'm told it isn't bad if you marinate it enough!
...I KNOW it is coming and I certainly deserve it too for all the stuff I have been slinging at him these past few years...
Got any recommendations for the Elkhart area? We've been wanting to do one of those factory tours and hang out in Amish country.
Funny you should ask...we just booked today for a weekend in June at Eby's Pines in Middlebury area...it is close to the RV Hall of Fame and the Jayco Factory as well as many others...
There is nothing special about the campground EXCEPT the owners are awesome!
We've been there 3 or 4 times now over the years...nice place convienent to Shipshewana (spelling?) too!
Hope that helps...let me know if you are interested in camping that weekend and I will check with the fellow running the group campout...nothing official rally wise so should be no problem but I'm not the official organizer...but to be honest...you could just camp that weekend regardless and we can hook up too!
We've taken the Jayco factory tour...a very cool tour (I have a Jayco) and I've also done the RV Hall of Fame...VERY cool IMO.
BTW...I really like Potato Creek...the paved bike path is very nice!!!
Joe.
