How did you get started powder coating?
What kind of media do you use to get it to really stick?
i was pleased with the way it came out.
my brother and i only had to pay to get our race quad frames PC'd ONCE to make us think about doing it ourselves. a friend and fellow racer had built his own oven and bought all of the stuff, but didnt want to keep it in storage and not use it so we took it all off his hands. its a nice alternative to epoxy paint, but it definitely is MUCH more work and can get really ugly if it doesnt come out right.
for the step i just blasted it with play sand from lowes because it was mostly raw metal to start. my quad parts i had previously done with a more aggressive blasting sand, but this last time i used fine coal slag (black beauty) and now i dont think i can ever go back to regular sand. its very aggressive and about double the price of sand.
another trick to getting the stuff to stick is to wipe it down with acetone, if it is a ferrous metal you soak it in a phosphatizer solution to stabilize it and keep it from rusting, and then i like to bake the raw part at about 450 for about 15 minutes. after that i will let it cool to the touch, acetone it again, rebake it and then spray powder. baking it helps to push water and trapped gasses out of any imperfections in the metal, that would otherwise push out through the melting powder and ruining the finish. we also have found that you can see what you are laying much better if the part is hot because the powder will melt and "lay out" right there and you can get a nice even coat. the downside to spraying it hot is that if you accidentally spray the wrong color you cant blow it off and start over. i did that once.
i was spraying these:
and then started to spray this but realized i had put it with the wrong group of parts:
so the swingarm had one beautiful coat of black under 6 coats of red to cover it and make it look the same color as these with 3 coats:
alden sprayed some "S&S wrinkle black" mixed with orange pearl on a set of a-arms...if he doesnt beat me to it i will see if he has any pics. it came out like a black/orange metallic wrinkle flip-flop color. it was really wild.
justin does his own PC'ing as well, i think he uses an old kitchen oven. that would be nice to have for small parts but dads garage is overstuffed as it is!
Sent an email over to the parts manager at Monaco Ford this evening. Hopefully I will be able to pick up my starter and solenoid tomorrow so that I can get that fixed before the snow falls. Of course I am developing one hell of a cold, so being under the truck is sure to not help that one bit.
friday is almost over! josiah cold-eaze taken in conjunction with zicam will make for a short lived cold. and dont forget chicken noodle soup the most powerful cold remedy known to man.
now that dads present is done, i have started my sisters present, those of us who are 25+ might know what it is...knock hockey! i didnt really get too far, milled some maple for the most of the evening.
its a table, that has 2 holes for scoreing (1 each side) and a block in front of each hole to act as a "goalie". each player gets a stick, and you take turns hitting the puck in an attempt to score. its a great game.
Got a call from Monaco this morning around 8 double checking on the make/model and auto/manual transmission. They have my parts, but only one starter. I am sure that many people will be clammering for it, ha! Off to get some breakfast and my parts. Should be a decent enough day to do this outside.
Projekt StreaMPG has a mod! 35% all the way around.

Wheels are still waiting to be shipped, therefore my money is still waiting to be sent. He says he will be able to ship them next week. Some logistical troubles on his end, I guess.
