My wife has the HJC CL-16 motorcycle helmet and it seems to be a good one. After some research and asking some family that do a pile of sledding, it seems that BRP has a modular that is top of the food chain... pricey sucker, but if its warm, comfortable and fog free, I'm happy...
I have the original Skidoo modular - slate grey so it doesnt look to mismatch anything. I am a big guy and ride hard so the heat output is high lol. It works, but does take some getting used to having that mask against your face...
I like the integrated slide down sunvisor too...
I would try the new modular next???
From all the reading I've done, it seems that the BRP mod2 is a real good performer. I'm a heavy breather also. I like a sno-X helmet with goggles, but its not a very warm set-up for our climate. I'll probably get a black Mod2, like you (warren)don't want to match anything!!!
I'm not much of a 'suit' guy... I have a pair of black bibbed snowpants, a brown heavy, warm work/chore coat, awesome red snowmobile gloves, and helmet to be determined...likely black.
The mod2 seems to be 390... a tad steep, but I paid 500 for my streetbike helmet, so I guess whats 4 for a sled helmet? If it proves to be as good as I've read/heard, it should be worth the money...
I also have a motocross helmet with goggles for when I used to mountain ride. I wear them sometimes in the spring here when its getting near melting temps but the wind required to keep them from fogging makes my eyes water. I have tried taping over the vent holes a bit but then they fog!
The helmet and goggles combo is lighter, but also noisier...
If the sled has a tall windshield, the goggles might work for me - some guys use these all winter but I cant..
The model that Sandi bought is a Formula Z, has the 583 twin cylinder Rotax, the "7.3 diesel" of the sled engines.
Whats the price on one of those Mod2's?
I had a 97 Formula Z 583 since it was a year old and LOVED that sled. Wish I still had it but traded it for my Srx 700. When I worked at the skidoo dealer in the 90's I only rebuilt one of those for every 20 of the other sizes. Good find by her!
There have been some engines by all manufacturers that have been bulletproof. The 488cc fan cooled polaris, 250cc yamaha bravo engine, the 583, 377, and 503 skidoo engines did really well... Can't name off any phenomenal engines by AC...
I have an Mod helmet with a heated visor and I really like that combo. I am a heavy breather also so I always had a hard time keeping my visor clear. I have a big head and the mod helmet fits better that anyone I have had before. As for a suit I just wear my old sking stuff and it is plenty warm although it is not very durable, it is starting to get torn up pretty bad.

The other sleds she was looking at was a 488 polaris. Im not a polaris guy at all but that would have been an awesome beginner sled as well!
Now that sets the bar for me though, I gotta find a good deal like that now haha.
We hade two 583 formula Z's, A '94 and '95. Loved them, put 5000 miles on them in two years and not a problem on both. The '94 was probably my favorite sled out of all the one's we had. we had the timing advanced one degree and the rotary valves cut down a little. Could still race in the stock class. I went up agaist a lot of sleds that year, 580/600 polaris triples, 570 yamaha exciter sx, 580 and 700 artic cats. and even 750 indy storm that could not beat the 583. the only race I lost that year was to a new 600 skidoo triple that the dealer let us take out to try.

Is that the original modular design like the one I have or the new style?
Quite a few of my friends have switched to KLIM gear - better stuff but expensive...
I usually wear my HH underneath, but I think I might try some Underarmour - looks better after a bit of use - the HH stuff looks like a big, blue, fuzzy root bear!

my father in law had an indy trail 488 and supersport 488. Both 1998 models, both bought new. The Trail was sold 3 years ago with 4000 miles on it, he got 3500 bucks for it. The supersport had 9000 miles on it (yes, 9k MILES) and he just sold it for 1700. The suspension was beat, chassis was getting a little shook, but the engine still measured 160lbs compression on both cylinders, with very little loss on the leakdown. Impressive if you ask me. Both sleds were rode hard, put away wet, and didn't have a lick of maintenance until I moved here and started using them a little... I think the new 550/fan that Polaris has may be a good contender to take place of the 488... What would you be looking for in a sled prep? Just in case I see something...

My work buddy is looking at a 550 polaris. Seems cheap for an 06 at 3grand, but he has a sled head friend that said the 550 touring was a cheaply made sled? Do you know anything about them at all?
And for me for a sled, something similar to what Sandi bought. 600ish cc, reliable, mid nineties at least, and I dont think I would buy one for more then 2 grand. We would also be looking for something cushy like a trail touring sled with electric start, two up seat and reverse for Sandi, and I would just drive hers. She needs to be comfy and warm to enjoy the outdoors. We had actually missed out on a good deal somewhere by regina (another kijiji find) for a 97 trail with the above specs, for 1500 bucks.
The one she bought was 1 grand, and if we found another one like that, it would easily take care of our sledding needs for years!
Did you go out at all today? COLD as hell up here today! For some reason I was fogging up really good too and had to ride with the visor open for awhile, bad idea today haha.
