Automatic summarization?! that isnt what I think it is, is it?!
I googled the etec 800r, and i think i came up with 163.9 hp, and the weight is 454 lbs.
Your assault is 154 hp, and weight is 487?
I wouldnt think the power/weight ratio wouldnt be that bad for the skidoo!
From what I read though, there are other ways to get a better power/weight ratio as well. Things like dropping weight from the sled, porting/polishing.
Seems to overkill for me, more of a competitive sledding type deal.
Just tear your engine apart Sherm, bore that thing out, drop a few grand more into the engine and you could be really high in the hp range!
Does the smoke and whatnot of the 2 strokes bother you guys? That stuff doesnt really bother me at all. Same with the fuel economy. But there again right now Im buying 10 yearish old sleds, so those things are always a less of a concern then reliability!
Yes, mine is acclaimed 154hp, 447lbs dry. The e-tec seems to be compareable, although after riding with a 600 renegade SDI this past weekend, I think the 800 would easily smoke me!! I'm really happy with my sled and its performance, I really don't need more power, especially when it usually affects reliability.
I'm not that concerned about fuel economy in sledding or any toys for that matter. If you're buying toys with fuel economy in mind, then I feel you shouldn't be buying toys. As for the smoke, its the EPA crooks making everyone go with the "clean" running engines. Frankly I don't think there's enough sleds in the world to make enough pollution to merit the expense that has resulted from trying to produce clean running engines.
The only time I'd think about buying 4-stroke, is if I have way too much money and want to produce 200+ reliable HP. The yamaha 4's seem to be pretty reliable while running moderately high turbo boost levels and 200+hp. However, these guys will have almost 20G invested in a sled!!! Thats a bit steep if you ask me!!!
I put a 2" riser on mine tonight, as well as one of those fuel can caddy's. Hopefully my silencer shows up soon so this years mods will be complete...
Went for a 5 min rip, and I sure like the riser. It really changes the feel of the machine, it stands on end much easier now with me being more upright.
Have you ever ridden much on a sled with risers? I find that if you're an "active/agressive" rider, you can perform much better with risers. This theory came from a ride a couple years ago with some buddies, I was on a 488 Polaris supersport, bone stock, everyone else was riding 6-8oo's all decked out. I had a chance to ride one 800summit rev, with fairly tall bars, and I was sold instantly. Even for sitting I found that having my arms almost level with my shoulders gave me a strong and in control feeling on tight trails. For rough conditions, you are able to stand much quicker and stand straighter to take strain off your back. Thats just my theories and opinion, I really like the riser.
My MBRP should be in today... BBRRRAAAAAPPPPPPP!!!!
No I havent really ridden a sled with risers. I dont find the need to "stand" my sleds up or anything like that. Playing around I dont ever find a time when I think "man it would be nice if my handlebars were higher".
I do have fairly long arms as well, but I never feel out of control or that I could have better control of any of the sleds I have ridden. Same with standing up, I never find that I feel those handlebars are low.
Gonna have to try em though! Ive gotten into certain "riding habits" over the past 20ish years that seem to work, so i dont search for new ways.
Exhaust should boost ya up 2-5ish horsepower eh?
I dunno what it is, I dont care much for loud sleds or bikes.
Hot rods, muscle cars, sports cars... well thats a different story
I like my streetbikes to have a nice tone but not loud. The style of riding is often a constant speed/rpm and it produces a headache inducing drone that I don't enjoy. Similar to my opinion on trucks or other everyday drivers. Dirtbikes, quads, sleds, I don't mind them loud as long as it isn't obnoxious. My riding style is more erratic and revvy than constant. I do lots of jumping, catwalking and stuff...
I like the pipe. Install was a snap, literally 5 minutes. The sound is addicting! One thing about this sled, when Polaris said they did all they could to shave weight on it, they really meant it!! Usually aftermarket performance parts are designed to be lighter than factory parts, but I couldn't feel much difference if there was any, between the stock can and the mbrp. Its not obnoxiously loud, but it does bark, and it should get louder as the fiberglass packing breaks down a bit. I just have to pick up a new set of ice scratchers now...short story, I'm a forgetful idiot...
Reverse lol!!! been there...also ground my mudflap up into the tunnel once too with a 2" track!
I have been adding handlebar risers since the mid 90's- usually as much as possible without needing longer throttle cable. Even on my RMK (which already has tall bars), I added more. I find it so much easier to handle the sled when carving, etc when my body is upright as opposed to reaching down to hold the bars.
Sherm, that factory can is light for sure on the new ones!
I used to have really loud sleds, but now I feel the public perception of sledders is in need of some improvement, and loud sleds isnt going to help bridge the rift...
Thats one thing I wish I had was a tipped rear skid... the RMK likes to dig in reverse if you try to get any speed up in deeper snow. Looking closer at my sled, I probably could have got more rise than the 2". The new RMK's come with Pro Taper bars from the factory which seem to have a pretty high rise. They'd be fine by themselves if a person was less than 6'.
I like loud, I love the BBRRAAAPP..... BUT***A person has to be smart about it. Its not that loud unless you're snapping it, and unless you're out late at night going through towns and such making noise and causing a disturbance, there's nothing wrong with a piped sled... However, as usual, there's a small number of dimwits that will create a bad name for everyone...
Well I went ahead and am the proud owner of a 98 summy 670x with reverse (and a hood from a 583 summit on it haha) Was a good deal, everything checked out, but does need new fuel lines.
I just cannot get enough of reverse! I dont use it the same way that you guys probably do though warren, there isnt much chance of me catching the snow flap either. Just gonna make it nice to back up to them logs I wanna skid

Awesome, Congrats! I would make sure there is flatland clutch parts in it to utilize all that power efficiently. Enjoy it!
I just had it running by pouring gas down the cylinders, and I have to clean the carbs badly. Seems like it runs really nice for the little spurts that I had it running though!
