due to the year of my truck i dont use the block heater. 15*F and above is no problem, but lower then that (started it at 5*F couple days ago) gets interesting. that 5*F start took me about a minute, and 3 different cranking attempts.
once started, do you guys let the truck idle or do you stay in it and keep the RPM's up? i let it idle for a couple seconds then slowly rev it up to 1200-1400 (guessing, dont have tach in yet), and hold it at that for a minute or 2, at least until the windshield clears up
Man today was miserable for starting her. She kept shuddering and shaking, and I could feel it firing, but it just wasn't starting.
Took some fighting and waiting but after like 10 minutes it finally fired up and shot out a black cloud, and was idling kinda loudly till it warmed up.
I'm thinking I should replace the glow plugs, as the PO prolly never did, and well it seems smart to be preventative as this winter is just gonna get colder...

get one of those magnetic heating pads that stick to the bottom of your oil pan, I hear they work quite well.

Your automatic cold-start system is not working? If you push down on the throttle while you glow the plugs and then release it she should upon startup idle at 900 rpms or so, then after several minutes when the coolant warms up some she will drop down to her normal idle of 650 or whatever.

oh yeah for sure.checking and replacing the glow plugs is a must.i did a lot of things last year, and replacing the glow plugs with a set of new was of course the most major thing that helped it start quicker.
you'll burn your starter up in short order having to crank so much.
........
for those who haven't fueled up in a couple months in the cold climates.time to start up ol' Betsy and fill her up with fresh fuel!
your local stores will have the fuel cut to keep it from gelling.
from all iv read here, this is the worst thing to deal with,as it can take days in a heated shop to thaw back out!
now is also a good time to switch to diesel additive with anti gel too.
now this is one miserable experience i hope to never have experience with.
what ever you do,don't mistakenly switch tanks with old summer/straight diesel fuel blend when it's really cold.ooooo i can see this happening to some easy.might be a good idea to treat/fill both tanks before ya forget lol.

Yeah as I was trying to start it I had your voice in the back of my head telling me to be patient so I didn't burn it out, after having read you writing about it repeatedly...
