Ok so been battling this issue for a while now but Im sick of this window not working. When I got the truck it worked perfectly then one day just quit.
I figured it was the motor so found a replacement, didnt help. The window always seems to go DOWN.
If I put power directly to the motor it goes both ways, for both motors actually.
Ive taken the switch apart and it is clean and seems to operate normally. Ive looked at the wiring in the door, all the way to the accordian rubber in the jam, seems fine I cannot see any obvious visible breaks. Its a bit hard to see further than that but nothing looks out of the ordinary, no chafing or cuts to the sheathing etc
The thing Im suspicious of is the auto down feature. When I cycle the switch to the down position, I can hear the relay under the steering column cycle. That relay cycles when the switch is in the DOWN position, NOT the AUTO position, is that normal?
The other thing thats driven me nuts a few times is occasionally when playing with it the window has suddenly started going up AND down but the directions are reversed. UP moves it down and DOWN moves the window up!! I think its just messing with my head....
I have not as of yet removed, cut or tampered with any of the stock wiring and to be honest dont really want to but Im super sick of this problem. Its the only thing on my EX which isnt working
I would probably at this point change out the switch. Then look further toasted the GEM module and or fuse panel for any sings of water intrusion. Could be getting corrosion in that area. Maybe even Chang the relay with another one in the panel just to rule that out also.

Oops forgot to mention I swapped out the relay with the one next to it which has the same part # and it does the same thing. No unusual signs of corrosion or anything that looks messy/dirty/wet under the dash behind the fuse panel etc. The truck is in very good shape overall and is quite clean. (Im in western Canada but its a US imported truck)
The reverse direction thing has me suspicious of the GEM module which sorta scares me, whats that puppy worth!?
You said you swapped the relay, but did you try swapping the switch itself to another location to see if the problem follows the switch?
I assume when you said above "it does the same thing" you mean that the DS window has the same problem, right?
Sounds like a switch problem to me... you said you cleaned it, but I'm thinking replacement is probably in order. I had to replace mine a few years ago. As I remember, I connected the DS switch to another window, and the problem followed the switch; replaced the switch, and bingo! Problem solved. Hope that's what you'll find too. Don't know anything about GEM module. No bling on my truck. )
The switch is a one peice item and you cant really "swap the switch". Its also special on the drivers side as its really got 3 positions and not two because of the auto down function.I talked to someone else and they seem to think my GEM is pooched. The local wrecker has one in stock but I have to find out which one mine is as he says there is 5-6 varieties, and even then it may need to be programmed at Ford. What a PITA
You can't do a full "swap", but I know I pulled the switch and connected it to the PS front door to test it. Again, it was 4+ years ago, so I'm short on particulars, but I remember pulling the PS switch to help narrow down the problem, cuz I hate buying parts hoping that I've identified the fault. Might be worth a shot, especially if your other option isn't readily available. This troubleshooting doesn't cost anything but your time.
I have this problem too:
I am having the same sort of noise after trying to toggle driver's side window motor switch on and off (up/down). This ticking noise coinciding with toggling is coming from under dash from visible 4 relay area (I assume one relay for each of 4 motors) but replacing one relay from operating windows does not fix the problem. Are all bad? No, can't be. Do all four need to be good for any one to work? Not likely I wouldn't think.
I changed the switch with one I found at a wrecker and it sorta works now. Beleive it or not the directions are reversed and the auto down doesnt work but for now its working well enough that I dont want to mess with it anymore!
I tried to swap relays and it didnt help, try to find another switch to try
I'm still dealing with the drivers side window issue. Sometimes works sometimes not. goes down but won't go up. works some days other days nothing. Sometimes I can turn off the ignition and open and shut the door and it works , other times no change. I purchased a replacement switch (group) and still does not work. Logic says bad switch but obviously it is not the problem. Sounds like the relay but from others comments here, swapping out the relay does not seem to solve the problem. Anyone really been able to definitively nail down this issue?
