These things sound like they are wound for sound by the time they hit 3000, especially with a manual trans in anything lower than high gear.
They can wind to around 5000 before bad things start happening. I don't advise taking one that high though, once the limit has been found, it's too late......
A carbed 300, with the stock 1bbl carb, will be hard pressed to make it much past 3500 with a load on it.
Personally, I tend to keep mine below 2500. So far, it's given me 13 years of trouble-free motoring, so I think I'll just stick to the plan.
Some will say they're good into the 5000s without any ill effects. However, as Bill was saying, there just isn't a reason to, so why do it?
Since their peak hp is 3000, (3400 with the EFI), that says something about their MAX RPM, since I don't think redline would only be a couple hundred RPMs above their peak HP range.
With my 4bbl, I rev it to 4000 quite often when passing, getting on the interstate, etc. Been to a 4500 quite a few times and it just sounds happy and hungry for more.
With yours, however, you only have a 1bbl and the sound your hearing is just the engine running out of breath (not approaching damage). I remember that sound back when it was stock.
I am so super happy I had this motor rebuilt, then installed it myself with a different tranny. It wasn't the safest thing to do, but when I towed home the 80 supercab with my little baby, just made me so proud (tear welling up in the corner of my eye...)
I wouldn't recommend over 3500 RPM myself. I towed a 71 Ford Bronco and had an 8 ft Lance camper that was fully loaded down to mexico and back with my old 76 F250 with 300 six, 1bbl and T18 4 speed, I also towed a 23 ft travel trailer with the bed of the truck loaded to Yellowstone and back. Climbing large hills it was 3rd gear and 45mph but that truck was a work horse and would just get down and go to work. Best truck I ever owned.
On my 95 I've had it up to 3500 Rpm when passing on the 2 lanes but most of the time I keep it below 3000. I was surprised at how much power it has from 2500-3000. When hauling my 4100 lb 5th wheeler I found 2800 Rpm was the best for climbing hills and 2000 Rpm was the lowest I'd let it drop to when shifting. In normal driving I like to keep it between 1500-2000. The 300 is a great engine for hauling and a good engine overall but I would be nervous bringing it above 4000.
