Hey guys. I want to take my windshield trim off to get painted to match the truck. How are you guys getting it off without bending it and breaking it. I know there are little plastic tabs on the back side of the trim that hold it to the cab, but not sure if I need a special tool to get it off or if I should just get new trim, get it painted and go ahead and bend and break the old stuff pulling it off. Thanks guys!
I went down and pulled it off of my parts truck and guess what... Every piece bent like crazy!!! lol. Maybe i'm looking at it too carefully, but still don't wanna mess it up unless I have new stuff already here.
There is a tool for removing those trim pieces, but I was able to use a small flat-head screwdriver instead. There's a metal clip riveted to the truck body, which I think gets pushed away from the body to release the plastic clip on the trim piece.
There is a special tool for this. It pulls the little metal clips away from the chrome strip and releases it. I bought one a hundred years ago when I was a line mechanic and we replaced windsheilds, got it from the tool vendor (Snap-On or Cornwell, I don't remember). Harbor Freight has it in a kit, it's the one shaped like an arrow in the pic:
cool I'm going to run by harbor freight on my way to work tomorrow and grab that if they have it in store. Thanks guys, I will try it with the tool and see what happens.
I had a windshield place R and R mine,......it was so packed with pine needles between the trim and the windshield/recess, that grass was starting to grow in there, best cleaned out before bad things happen......they charged $10.
I say buy the tool. You could possibly get a screwdriver or putty knife to remove the trim but you also have a better chance of breaking the clips that hold the trim on. I haven't had to remove ford trim yet but other clips are usually very brittle. Break one stupid clip and you're off to the auto-parts store if you're lucky. Junkyard or some body shop suppliers if not.
