Be a Real Explorer With This Unique Ford Prerunner
Finally an Explorer worthy of the name! This Eddie Bauer Sport is ready for open desert running.
If you’ve dreamed about bombing around on the desert of the American west, this might be one of the least expensive ways to fulfill that dream. Ford’s Explorer platform used to be pretty decent at off-road activities, and with the choice modifications made to this particular one we found in the LA area Craigslist, we imagine it’d be a pretty good desert traveler.
Starting with the slightly shorter Explorer Sport two-door model, this four-wheel drive four-point-slow V6 Eddie Bauer edition probably led a really cushy life hauling kids, before it was converted to a long-travel off-roader. If we needed a prerunner style truck that was capable of seating four in relative comfort, we’d probably buy this one.
The ad for this truck lists all of the work has having been done by Coastal Fab Werx in southern California, and the work done doesn’t look insubstantial. With a good set of off-road shocks, a four-inch lift kit, and 32″ BFG tires, this truck has a claimed 17″ of travel. That should be good for all of your open plain action needs, assuming they’re valved properly. The truck’s lift kit features a shackle style lift on the leaf springs, and four inches seems excessive to still be using shackles, so we would probably swap to a taller leaf if this were ours. We’d probably also paint the Explorer an original shade of dark green to keep it period correct.
What about you, what would you change?
