6V Charging System Repair - So Hard 😁!
Multimeter
Socket Set
Hammer (Dead Blow preferred for gently knocking things around)
Service/Shop Manual
Lube (for bearings/bushings)
Growler (optional)
In waking one of my fleet for the season, I found that the charging system wasn't charging. I didn't immediately stoop to 12V or Alternator conversion antics.
I validated no voltage/current between ARM and Ground with my multimeter. I then re-polarized the generator, and the still re-verified no electricity flow between ARM and Ground. I shorted Field and and ARM at the generator, and again checked for electricity flow between ARM and Ground. Nothing. Definitely the generator that is wrong. Used the simple tools to remove the generator from the truck. Performed all applicable tests in the service manual and found the armature at fault. Disassembled the generator with the basic tools. Verified diagnosis with a growler (not required, I just happened to have one to verify it). Obtained, tested, and installed a replacement armature assembly. Included a new common off the shelf Timken bearing (because I was in there). Re-used existing brushes and bushing (much life left, good even wear pattern), and lubed accordingly. Installed the reassembled generator and polarized it. Repair verified as charging system indicated charging as expected.
No advanced tools or skills required. Just basic tools and the ability to read and follow a service manual.
After putting in a newly rebuilt flathead from H&H in 2023, and then taking out every “modern” replacement engine accessory he had on there was exactly where my decent into hell began. Because I’ll tell you one thing I haven’t had one thing that didn’t have be done two or three times until I found the right person to rebuild all the original parts that i personally wanted on the engine.
It’s no wonder why a shop like H&H uses these relatively reliable products like power master generators, Petronix ignition, and high torque mini starters as well as brand new Stromberg carburetors on 75 plus year old engines . Their engine rebuild was flawless, but I’ve been down each and every road with badly rebuilt Starters, Voltage Regulators, Generators, Carburetors, and Distributors! The fuel pump and carburetor I run are the common reproductions, look very similar to originals and work very well.
However I find learning about all of this the best part. It’s why I bought this truck 6-7 years ago. Back then I knew nothing, now I know next to nothing, but I always enjoy reading your posts BMoran! You’re an invaluable resource on this forum and an inspiration to me!
