How This Ford Super Duty Diesel Hit 900K Miles With Original CP4 Pump
As it turns out, making your Ford Super Duty diesel CP4 pump last forever is fairly simple to do, as we can clearly see here.
Most Ford Super Duty diesel owners out there are well aware what a CP4 pump is, but not just because they’re well-versed on diesel engine components. Rather, since the CP4 pump debuted on Power Stroke engines back in 2011, it’s been plagued by failures, warranty. claims, and even lawsuits. Designed to pressurize fuel and feed it into the fuel system’s common rail and injectors, CP4 pumps tend to fail due to a lack of lubricity, which ultimately leads to metal shavings being released into the fuel system. Many Power Stroke owners have experienced this problem over the years, but this Ford Super Duty diesel recently rolled into Dave’s Auto Center with a ton of miles on the clock – and the original CP4 pump.
This Ford Super Duty diesel has traveled 900,000 miles, in fact, which it has accumulated in a pretty short period of time since its owner uses the truck to transport goods across the country. The truck’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel had finally experienced some sort of failure, which is why it’s heading to the shop, but overall, it’s been pretty darn reliable, though the fuel injectors were replaced at 670,000 miles – the same time the turbo was swapped out, too.
The secret behind making the Ford Super Duty diesel chug along for so long with no fuel system issues, it seems, is the use of a good additive, according to the owner, as well as the fact that they need to “run every day.” Of course, he was diligent about maintenance too, changing the fuel filters on a regular basis. Regardless, the use of a good additive helps compensate for modern-day ultra-low sulfur diesel (USLD) fuel, which offers less lubricity than previous, less environmentally-friendly diesel fuels.
What do you think about this 900K-mile CP4 pump and this owner’s maintenance schedule?

The proof of that is right here in the pudding, because the pump is still very clean with no metal shavings present. It honestly looks like it could have just come out of a box as a brand new replacement part, in fact, though there are just a few slight lines present that reveal it’s been gently used. Our host is certainly impressed, saying that he’s “blown away” by just how well this CP4 pump has held up – not terribly surprising, as he’s probably seen his fair share of grenaded ones over the years, since they tend to die at around the 40k mark.
The key to making a CP4 pump go the distance, thankfully, is pretty simple it seems – by increasing the lubricity of your diesel fuel. In this case, the Ford Super Duty diesel owner also let his engine run for long periods as well, much like a big rig. In this case, that means over 19,000 hours, with 4,700 hours of idle time from him sleeping in the truck or working nearby and leaving it running the entire time. That’s obviously not feasible for everyone to do, but we imagine that merely using a fuel additive and sticking to a proper maintenance schedule will have a big impact on longevity, too.
