I would leave the plate in there but you can rip the element out.

I did the same and no problems, and its very easy to clean the bottom of the canister in that way.

How the heck do you get that plate out? I broke my heater element last night. Today I unhooked it from the outside and inside and removed it. Now I need to clean the bottom of the bowl and I can't figure out how to get the plate out. It looks like the middle post (that the fuel filter goes on) has a black plastic bolt but there is no tool I own can get down in it to turn it. Any advice?

The stand pipe is left hand thread and many use a crows foot wrench to get it out.

Secondarychaos the fuel heater is hardly useful! Been a long time since I have had one hooked up and endured many a cold nights.

U need somethen bigger than 3/4 or 19mm for a crows foot.
I just used a pair of needlenose vicegrips, probably not the best thing to use but it worked.

Thanks, TJ. Just bought a new set of crowsfeet wrenches and got it removed. Now I am gonna give it a shot at soldering the darn heater element which I broke in the first place.
