1994 f150 300 with E40D tranns question

In my 1994 f150 (127000 miles) I have E40D trans. Ive been having a hard shift with it latley from what seems to be 3rd to 4th gear. (Notice it ALOT going 55+). Toke it to a tranny shop they told me it needs a rebuild which is gonna cost about $2000. I threw some lucas trans fix in it and im hoping that works. I noticed I do not have a speed control sensor just a plug where it would go so that cant be the problem.
1st question is there any thing else I can check?
2nd question is if I do rebuild is there anything special I should have done to it?

Thanks in advanced!

No, it couldn't be the MLPS.

Checking for codes is the next place to go.

Yeah check the computer for fault codes. Even if your check engine light is off you can still have codes stored that might help with diagnosing the problem.

And any transmission shop that told me I need a rebuild without telling me exactly what failed and why would never see me again.
