1992 F-150 4x4
I just got my truck back after long rebuild(long story) well all has been ok until 2 days ago and it slipped from 1st to 2nd then I took my foot off accelerator and all was good until again yesterday it did it again all the same but then surged a bit then stopped. My speedo hasn't work regularly for a year or so and I need a speed sensor the mechanic claims that is why it is slipping. I also need a new EGR as well he said and these are why this is happening is this true. I already know he is an idiot(took him 8 mos to realize old tranny case had a crack). I will be replacing the speedocable and probably the speed sensor as well today. He said the speed sensor is in the rearend is that true? Do you think he is why it is slipping?
Thanks,
Kallie
Don't know your model year, but my 94 F250 uses the speed sensor to control shifts. If the snesor is out, the tranny may shift funny, your cruise control won't work, the speedo may not work(But yours sounds like it uses a cable so doesn't apply) and you may set a code.
I think the speed sensor on your model is on the tranny tail shaft, but I don't really know. My 94 has it on the diff.
It is a 1992 F-150 supercab 4x4. It is now also slipping from 3rd to 4th. Basically so far it has slipped once each day for the past 3 days and today is not over. I don't know where the speedo sensor is, the mechanic is saying it is on the rearend and he has my repair manual and won't give it back! I just went to a local tranny shop and he didn't drive it but said it just has to be rebuilt and that is it.

Kallie, the speed sensor is mounted in the rear end in most all of these trucks. 99% sure that is where yours is. If the speed sensor isn't working properly, the transmission will not shift correctly. This is because the PCM (Powertrain Control Module = computer) has to have the information from the speed sensor to know when to shift the transmission.
Also, if you drive the truck for an extended period of time with the speed sensor not functioning correctly, it can severely damage the transmission. Depending on the problem, a good transmission shop *could* accurately diagnose such a problem without test driving the truck.
And a cracked case can be a difficult thing to figure out. But 8 months is a little too much.
I did go to Napa auto parts a large parts supplier today and was told there is no such thing for my truck and that the speedo cable and speed sensor would be attached. So that messed me up so I am going to another tommorrow.
Thank you I appreciate your help,
Kallie
