66 F100
Folks,
Thanks for the links! The two tone in Tacoma is nice. The 6 cyl might be struggling a little with the power steering and the power brakes? I'm sure being freshened, its just fine. We drove those 6 cyl trucks many miles.
On the new to us truck. Its home. Picked up and delivered on Monday.
Always a few surprises on a new old ride. I got the insurance on it today and will do title work soon.
Truck starts and drives. It does have a little more aged paint and dings and rust than I expected. But they never said it was rust free or paint chip free. So there you go. The baby has a rash! Those areas may be addressed or ignored for a while. We will try to pick our battles wisely. Time will tell on a lot of this.
The age of these trucks and the care they have gotten and the weather and work they may have been through is part of the back story. I did drive the truck about 10 miles today. Power steering was responding and worked fine. Brakes although felt soft initially when parked, provided plenty of quick strong braking. Engine seemed to run ok for this short trip. Had more than expected power for initial testing. The transmission shift ok and did get to 50 mph and the overdrive kicked in too. See an oil leak at back of engine/ front of tranny, and will check that out more. Was not expecting that but almost every thing I have leaks. Maybe oil pan to engine issue?? With the truck on the lift, the passenger side king pin has some wear. So we will address both of those soon. The truck seemed to go down the road pretty good from a steering test.
Some little things that I can work on such as wing window seals and latches at some point. These are aged and the latches are loose. I am sure this may be the case in a lot of trucks this age. Since we do not have AC those can be real handy to cool off the cab when its 90 degrees and humid.
The turn signal switch canceling feature is not functioning well. I want to get info on improving/ repairing/ replacing that item. If not I may be the old man in the old truck with his turn signal on for miles! Also the shift lever knuckle is a little worn at the column where the pin goes through. Have never had to repair one of these, but you guys can help me figure that out. Another minor one is the horn ring is not active all the way around. When I attempt to fix the turn signal might as well look at that. The old while your in there syndrome!
The drip rail area has some rust that I would like to address at some point with maybe sanding primer, color match paint and seam sealer? This bothers me if the truck is ever washed or driven in rain.
Ideas and or suggestions on all of these areas is appreciated. Oh there will be more. I was not really looking for a project but my friend John and I now have one.
So I am going to leave the wheels as is for a while. Too many other things are in the way. The 51 Ford car hub caps inside the white rims, are giving me a sign from my dad and mom. Another story for later date. They look ok on the truck. I have looked at several with the chrome rims and baby moons and its not doing it for me at this time.
The 6 rear bumper bolts are being soaked with Kroil as we write this. The new chrome rear bumper and licence lights will replace the white bumper. The Vintage PA plate will become part of the new story.
I can also live with somethings being not corrected for a long time. Other things I want to get after and fix or improve. Just the way I roll. It will be a roller-coaster ride for a while. What to work on next will become the norm. Are we trying to make this a show truck NO! Just some things I think John and I can handle to keep us busy and searching and learning so we can talk 66 F100s at the ice cream stands or maybe a car show. This is not a award winning truck at all. But like most of these older rides it may turn some heads, just not sure in what direction?

The rust at the front of the bed is not going to be an easy fix and may involve the bed being removed and positioned for repairs. This sounds not good, and I would prefer it was all good, but the reality is this has seen some rain and water in that area. Now my 2017 F250 has a much worse case of rust in the bed supports than this 66. So I cant get too worked up. The salt up here is terrible. I am happy to have a new to us 60 year old Ford F100 truck in the shop. I look forward to some small projects on it in the future. You folks will help me and guide me along the way. Don't expect high end or high dollar repairs of fixes here! We are two old guys bumbling along with mediocre skills and a love of old iron especially Fords! In between those projects listed so far I do plan to drive the truck often also. Bought it as driver and that's the plan. We will see how we do on the punch list of initial items. Of course there will be more too.
Some pictures This is like the new baby pictures thing .Only we actually get to see it come out of the birth canal!

Big White Ford doing the job! Ran from Danville KY to Albion PA in 9 hours with a stop to unload a second car that was in there. Yikes!

This guy did not monkey around. But he was interested to see what was under the hood. He said it sounded good. Me too ,I just had to figure out the hood latch!

Yep that's the color. I had no idea that he would have to climb thought the passengers side open window to get in? Fired it up and drove it out after taking the straps off it.

You can take this truck to the Walmart parking lot and not have to worry about door dings! it has plenty all ready!

About here is where I had to figure out the hood latch. Kind of like when they hand you the baby! Yikes

I got it in the shop, and need to get back to my duties for the evening. More to follow. First reaction. Cute, doesn't look like me, and has some wrinkles, and it pees on the floor a little! Welcome to the world of old Fords. Does it have a name yet No. Hummm?

My middle of the night posts may become more normal. I am loving my work schedule. Not complaining here. Shift starts about 4 p.m. to noon the next day. Up for snacks and to get some content loaded here on the old 66 F100.
Dassler, So a little strange you thought of "Audrey" She was my aunt and Cheryl s aunt also. My uncle Clair and Cheryl's aunt Audrey were married During WWII. No we are not cousins but have the same cousins!
That is kind of strange that would be a name you would pick? Hummm? I will think on that one! I kind of like it! Family and fun and not heard much. She was a giggly character for sure! Thanks for your positive comments on the truck. My rant above has been tempered with some sleep and more reviews of Audrey! (Name might stick)?? Also having friends and family do some close up looks and lots of positive comments.
Tony,
You have a great summary of the Fords or old things marking their territory. I am wide open to how the shift lever slop is fixed? It was not my priority but is moved up now. Can you point me to a thread on the repair or replacement to bring it back around? The cross pin area is worn for sure. lots of wiggle in the shift lever. All I can think of is well worn die cast parts that may not be repairable or reman-ed?
And yes today the plan is developed more on Audrey and her mission here at the C bar C farm.
So a friend and his son and Grandson came over John was looking over the truck in greater detail than me. He found a engine block number and a rebuild tag in the left rear soft plug in the block. He started the old 351W several times and seemed to smile more each time! We were standing back looking at Audrey and he says " She looks like a shop truck"! Well there you go that's it all my problems above just fell into place! Yep Shop truck! I have a shop why not have the rig to go get parts and maybe do a smokin burn out then taking the back dirt roads home?? Perfect! And as mentioned all the things can be worked on or ignored in time!
Ok some pictures for today's post:

In the shop. Audrey drew first blood. Tried to look under it with a creeper and jammed my cheek and eyeball into part of the frame. While recovering, I happened to remember I did have a 12000 lb lift surrounding the truck! Maybe that makes more sense??

.jpg)
Oh yeah much better! Sorry my shop is always a mess. Never enough places for all my junk.
.jpg)
So this shop truck thing. Shop trucks don't have to get all duded up to go to the dance. Just jump in and go! I like the concept. Because I am basically lazy anyway. Will Audrey go to a couple car cruise in's and for ice cream Yes for sure! I think it will do that. But we also have a very spoiled 65 Merc that is not happy with Audrey arriving. And little red got all the attention last season. The Comet "little red" as in "riding hood" , has not started yet. Pulling all the plugs and stroking her a lot.
On the 66: king pins need changed?.Called NAPA and got a price of $140. Online kits are a lot cheaper do we get what we pay for? Thinking of getting all greased up and tackiling the kingpins here in the shop. You Tube guy makes it look easy from here on the couch!

Cheryl Approving her truck:

Friend John in the Custom Cab:

Dassler, I found the roof detail you mentioned. The shallow indent! I like it and many of the other features of Audrey's design.

Ok a bunch of random pictures from under the truck. Comments or concerns welcome. learning here: Just a over view of the under side. No one wants to talk about these areas.

Fuel pump system

A rust through spot on the driver floorboard. Yep that's original!

.jpg)
.jpg)
Yep this is not a rust free truck! Was not advertised as such. This is what we have to work with. Life goes on. I am ok.

That's enough for tonight.

Thanks I see the outer housing re-pops. Not sure what else I may need? I do need to get in there. I am sure there will be more once opened up. I did order the turn signal cancel plastic part. I would like to repair and paint the steering wheel while its off. We will see. Is there a turn signal indicator on both sides of the instrument cluster? The right one flashes. The other little left side looks like the high beam indicator??

Might not use Audery as the shop trucks name? Will do a little more digging on that name for the turquoise shop truck. So nominations are open again. Sorry

So The projects are stacking up already. With my limit on time to get started on this and all my other toys it may take a while.
Take apart the steering wheel and see why the
- shifter lever is all loosely goosey
- turn signal doesn't cancel
- determine why the horn only beeps on one side
- maybe improve the steering wheel
- Remove rear bumper and replace with more bling
- Replace the king pins
That list above should keep me and John busy for several days!
Parts ordered for some of the above projects. Keep falling forward!

Looks like you and John have some fun times coming up. Keep us posted.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I know you said you are away from your truck, but have ideas for the next steps. Ok to share that plan here too.
My 4 hour time off today was used to remove a 6 volt battery and the battery cables on our daughters Old Massey Pony tractor. The new Napa battery rolled it right over and it purred pretty good. May need some fresh gas?
So the 66. I walked past it in the shop. It already has some dust on it. Perfect!
I did check with the local paint shop. Lake City Paints/ They quickly found the Ford Code B as in Caribbean Turquoise. They can Mix some and get into a aresol in a short time. So we can do some touch ups as needed. I think I am going to buy a handheld sandblaster. Was thinking of trying to use that to clean up some rusted areas, like the drip rail area. It needs some attention.
I have not tried that. Open to suggestions?
I did figure out that the turn signal indicator is only on the right side of the instrument cluster. With the High/ Low beam indicator on the left in red. I think this stuff is neat. You can see I am just learning on these old rides. I did get an owners manual but the VIN does not match. So it must be for another truck?

I like the "big green" 4x4 long bed! Very nice! Is that yours too? I assume little green is the first on you posted in my thread?
I was thinking Elene which is the spelling my grandmother wanted for my mom. Some how the hospital got Eilene which is what is on her birth records. Mom always liked Elene and that is what she preferred to be called. I don't remember her, as I was 1-1/2 when she was killed in an auto accident. The car we were in was a 51 Ford, hence the 51 Ford car hub caps, that came on this truck, are to me, a sign from her or my dad. I guess that would be "green Elene"?
Or I could go with a guy truck theme, and use my dads name and my middle name Earl!
Not "green Earl" just Earl!
We were in the same car along with my older brother. Why there were not four crosses on that corner I will never know? We were left here on this earth for some reason. Better make the best of it. Sorry to get off track there. I can kind of see "Earl" painted on the drivers door and "Elene" on the passengers side under the door glass. Or Earls shop painted on the doors like a business? Now watching for 65-66 trucks on Facebook a little, just for com-parables as in price and condition. Some really nice ones and some that need a lot of attention! Our shop truck falls in there somewhere. She or he is here, the money is spent, and it is still talking to me each time I walk by it.
By the way how can you tell if its a boy or a girl? I looked under it and couldn't tell?

Thanks for the support guys. Tony mentioned several paint things. Like the stone guard behind the front bumper being silver or argent? Also the bars behind the FORD letters should be black. Any examples (pictures) of these areas on original trucks? Maybe sales brochures would show those details? Am I going for a re-make this into a concourse original show truck? Heck no! I just like to be able to tell folks what is wrong with my stuff. It may sound weird but I do that a lot. I guess it tells folks that the car or truck is not totally original and that we have thought about the details, or what has been modified and maybe why. That is part of the story or knowing the back story. I do like to tell stories!
So this truck supposedly came out of Kentucky then went to India then back the Indiana last year. The seller is the one that made most of the engine and steering brake mods, and also cleaned up the interior to his liking. That is about all I know. Yes it for sure has been repainted at least once. I can now see some of the previous body work on the hood and the lower drivers door. Also some body work that has not been done to tidy up the exterior. Hence the more shop truck theme.
But hey I just did more body work (rust repair) than what I have seen on this turquoise truck on our 2015 Super Duty. Again the salt up here just eats them up. I used our 2015 more in the salt than any other time of the year as we were making maple syrup and using it to haul sap in a 325 gal tank on the back. The spring is when we do that and the salt and the dirt roads are not a great combo.
Yes we have some fun playing in the dirt pulling antique Allis tractors too. That's a 1958 D17 gas tractor.

Speaking of trucks I need to fire up the 32 and go for a short spin also. This truck is fun to drive. It checks all the old Ford boxes! Four speed with granny low. Now have too many to drive all of them often now!
That's why we have kids, grand kids and great grand kids.
We also have two helpers here with Cheryl and I. Lucy our Norwegian Forest cat and Duke our 9 month old Golden Retriever. Both try to help me when crafting a post.
I will close with a dash picture:

Ok I see the indicators there now!
Glad that 66 4x4 will stay in the family a long time. You just can't get them back easily when gone! Is that plate a vintage plate?? Pa has those too. That's what I will put on the 66. Hope maybe some of my toys will go to family, Never know, none were bought new. None were family cars or trucks. Not sure there is any interest in these old toys?
A friend Tim and his family were over today and we took a gander at the 66. He was surprised at how most of the truck was very good! He thought the 351 sounded good. It was good to get other opinions too.
Turn the key, the fuel pump kicks on and it fires good. Does an old man need a somewhat noisy hot rod shop truck? Hummm?

Tim suggested maybe improving the drip rail and painting the top of the cab white. Any suggestions on that? Yes its not original to the truck but might look pretty good? Lots of two tones out there. Ideas, suggestions, always welcome.
The state will get their share tomorrow as the title work gets completed. Then the waiting game till the paper work comes back. By then the weather may be nice enough to get the turquoise truck out for some testing, and ice cream too! I did get the king pin kit. The kit looks good .So plenty of things to work on as we wait.
none of mine have fuzzy dice hangin...

Big Green is taken also.
