Yeah, your shim stack is not controlling the vertical preload on the bearing when above the axle and they will get hammered by rotational forces they were never meant to see. It probably won't implode immediately, but it’s not doing the job in that location.

A nice pictorial with these kits could avoid old people making mistakes! Thanks for the support and information on the shims. I thought of them more as spacers rather than preload shims. Not sure how the shims preload the bearing when there is still a little clearance in the system? Seems the shims under the bearing will also be taking the load of the truck and might see some rotational forces also? Learning here for sure! There were no shims in the stack up as we took it apart.

The shims only do their job when they’re under the lower bearing because that’s the point in the stack that controls vertical preload. Above the axle they’re not in the load path, so they can’t set clearance — they just get dragged through rotation. The bearing handles the rotational load; the shim stack only handles vertical spacing, and when it’s under the bearing it doesn’t see any rotation at all because the bearing isolates it from that.

Thank you for the explanation on the shims. I will take these apart in the near future and move the shims down under the bearing, and while in there, move the seal to the top underside of upper spindle also. Appreciate the information! Good stuff! I will have many more questions on this old 66 F100 also!
Remember is only Nuts and Bolts!

I was doing more digging and will muddy the waters a little more. Found Number Dummy picture and comments from you and others in a 2017 thread on same king pin subject.With the same small seals in the Moog kit.
Couple of details that may or may not be useful?
In that Ford pictorial the shim (or I assume the shim) shows being on top of the bearing. It is S .... number in the right of the picture.
Also the grease seal which I have in the wrong place, looks to be in the top and may have only come along after 1968?? So I theory I could leave it out.
Just doing some research after the fact. Which I should do ahead but I am a guy and we typically don't read instructions much anyway.
Also seen several videos where they put the shims on the top. So It is kind of all over the place as to what folks have done.
I appreciate the info and will check some things and decide if I am going to rearrange shims and seals.

I see a number 87022-S above the bearing but that's not the number for the shims so not sure what that is. The shims would be a base number of 3117 and I'm not seeing any in that drawing. In that thread Crop Duster says his 1968 had the shim under the bearing on one side. Under the bearing is what I'm used to always seeing. Even if the shim is above the bearing but still under the axle, it’s on the wrong side of the bearing. The shim has to sit below the rotating race to control end‑play. Above the bearing it’s not in the functional load path — it can’t set clearance and it just gets dragged through rotation.

The thrust load only travels through one surface of the bearing. A thrust bearing has a fixed race (stationary relative to the axle) and a rotating race (moves with the spindle). Only one side of the bearing is designed to carry the vertical load.

The correct load path is Axle boss → bearing → shim → spindle. The shim must sit on the rotating side of the bearing so it can set the vertical clearance between the spindle and the axle.

Guys,
I got Cheryl in the truck last night. Went to town and got some gas and took the long way home. She was scared to death at every turn and take off, even easy starts. She was better during the day today and knowing we were going to get ice cream!
Turn signal light was not functioning on the dash at several times. So it will be good if we can get that looked and hopefully improved/repaired soon.
I did rebuild the drivers side window handle and crank. Added a clip inside the loose black ****. and tightened the handle on the shaft. Better for a shop truck.




Looks like a green truck under the lights:


PA state law says if its this nice out you have to go get ice cream. Had several guys drooling over the 66 shop truck. The banana split was good too!


New rear bumper looks great. Shout out to Summit Racing!


The baby's first bath pictures.




We probably put 50 miles on it running main roads but not the interstate yet. It drove very good! for a 66. Shifted into overdrive at about 50. No idea yet how to adjust the idle down just a tad? Might need new shocks on the rear? Hard to tell with the short wheel base, Our roads are not good. We were doing 60-70 mph with no effort and drove steady straight down the road.
Happy with initial testing. The bling on the back suits me just fine.
We stopped at John and Cathy's house. John has been collecting Ford parts for years. His garages are full of Fords. He gave me a new old stock taillight bezel ( I think one fits either side?) and a horn ring internal component too!


Great Grandson Rhett got in and fired the 351 up. He had a big smile! He will be 11 in a couple weeks. He just got the perm, The girls should love that!

Chris, great use of the truck - ice cream!!!

Don't take anything I say personally. Well, most things anyway </chuckle>. I deal mostly in what I believe Ford did but vehicles go down the road without regard to some of the engineering a manufacturer might put into something. For example, I believe since Ford gave the rear lamp bezels (doors as they called them) different part numbers for left and right that they aren't the same. Would they fasten onto either side - maybe - but I don't think that's how they were designed.

The latest part numbers I know of are as follows

C4TZ-13489-E - DOOR - REAR LAMP - R.H. - less lens, includes attaching parts
C4TZ-13489-F - DOOR - REAR LAMP - L.H. - less lens, includes attaching parts

I'd have to try them on a left and right lenses, which are also different part numbers. I think they might go on but definitely a left and a right. Well, I thought it might be a good example... HA!

Thanks Rusty. I can't take credit for the paint. I did do some of the bodywork ahead of time but much of the work was done by my buddy of about 57-58 years named Jon Byers. Some people misspell his first name as John. Here's an example. I have an older t-shirt with this 1941 car on it. It was Jon's shop car for several years, but he eventually sold it. Jon closed his shop after about 35 years and now works at Griots headquarters.


Matt, I have no particular timeline to finish it. I have so many projects and things going on it would probably make most people's heads spin. But I do make some sort of headway on it almost daily.

Chad, I guess that might have been a thread I missed, thanks for the link. It was great to see your amazing attention to detail and the amazing work you and your friends have done so fare.
