1952 original radio
I bought a 1952 f-4 for parts and it has a radio
in the stock location.
I would like to know if it is original or not.
it says becker high fidelity on the face.
it has 5 white buttons, a tuner and a volume
**** stud (***** missing)
Is it worth anything? (origninal or not)

You can put the radios from a 49-50 Ford car in that spot without any problems. There's numbers and letters on the side of the radio that will determine if it's a car or a truck radio. The shop manual for the trucks lists them as to what model number fits what years. I wouldn't throw it out. it sounds like a deluxe 8 tube radio by your description.

Tubes have an undeserved reputation for unreliability, at least in radios. TV's, well... Anyway, replacement tubes (rarely needed) are (mostly) cheap and plentiful and don't wear out sitting on the shelf all these years. The real problem in the old radios are the capacitors/condensors - the coupling and bypass caps were of a paper and foil design dipped in wax which weren't very good to begin with, and they short or 'leak' electrically.
Lots of car radios used a 'vibrator' power inverter as well for the B+, modern repros are available for those, too. - The serious restoration folks pay serious bucks for certain models. If you need help with repair let me know, or if you want to send it out for restoration I can hook you up with the right people. If it works now, you can probably improve performance quite a bit with just a few parts and tweaks.

Well this one must not be original since it doesn't say ford anywhere on it, plus it won't fit in my 49'
It has square buttons not round ones like the pics in my shop manual.
I did find a really rusty 52 in a junk yard but again it won't fit in my 49'. And I found a radio in a 50' f-5 dump with round buttons so I guess I will have to try to fix that one up.
If anyone is interested in the square botton radio just say so, I can't use it plus I don't beleve it is original.
Also it someone wants a real bad looking original 52 radio I could probally get it out of the truck without too much trouble (that dash is rusted so bad I would probally just have to pull!)

Becker is not a Ford. Most likely from a European car.
Ive been into electronics for over 40 years and restoring auto radios has been a paying sideline most of that time. Along with home and collector shortwave/military radios.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Aug-02 AT 11:10 AM (EST)] Sometimes I'm just asleep at the wheel. I have the owners manual for the 53 and it has a picture of the radio. It is round and pretty strange looking but, at least now I know that it is unlikely to be converted to am/fm/cd.

As an aside, my 54 came with an aftermarket Motorola (6v) with a bullet shaped control unit on the column. Three cables controlled the power unit on the firewall with a remote speaker under the glovebox.Cool stuff but totally dinosaur.Todd.
