I have a problem with my 2.9L.While driving it the engine started to spit & sputter then died all together. The engine will crank with no problem but won't start. I think it is the electric fuel pump but not 100 percent sure? I turn the key to see if I can hear the pump whining but do not hear anything. I also tried to release the pressure in the fuel system by going to the valve on top of the fuel rail but got no fuel or air out of it. Well if anyone can help me with this matter please post me back.
Check inertia switch. Under top of carpet next to hump on passenger side where the passengers left foot would ride. Make sure switch on top of connector is pushed down. These switches can go wrong so it could be this.
This may sound stupid but make sure you have gas in tank. Sending unit may be broken. Pour some gas in tank and try to start again.
Turn ignition on and listen for pump very closely. It's quite loud with gas filler off when turning on ignition. If no noise then your pump has gone or wiring is shot. I would check all this first before going any further. Hope this is helpful. Happy Holidays to you to.
What year is this & do you have a wiring diagram? The wiring diagram for my 87 shows fuse links, not fuses. You need voltage to the fuel pump relay from the main relay & from a fuse link to turn on the fuel pumps on an 87.
I seemed to remember one of our other members having trouble with getting fuel pressure, and he found a trick for tapping on a relay under the hood. If you do a search on fuel pressure problems I am sure you will find it.
As others have mentioned.....
check to make sure you have gas
check the fuse for the fuel pump/sending unit
have a buddy turn the key while you are down near the tank so you can hear
check/reset the inertia switch
also make sure your fuel filter is not clogged up
Sorry! I'm not quite sure. This is a 87 ranger where would I look? Dose it look like a black rectangle box on the driverside?
Matt
Remove the cover between the air filter housing & fender. Fuel pump relay will have 4 wires Red, yellow, tan/light green & orange/light blue. If it's the factory relay I belive it will be green.
With the key at run you should see voltage from the main relay on red & from the fuse link on yellow.
Ok I looked under the passengerside of the carpet for the mysterious inertia switch. Sorry but but I could have thrown a new carpet in with what I pulled back!LOL!!! I found the ECM box but could not find the I/Switch? Is it further up toword the dash? I will try all the other suggestions when Mother Nature lets up . Thank You All!!
On my 94, it's up near your toes near the heater box. I think it's in more/less the middle but I haven't looked at it in almost 10 years. Ver little carpet must be pulled back to see it; it's near the top of the carpet.
You have a v6 so your inertia switch should be there. It's on the passenger side right next to the hump, so just above the outside of the passengers left foot., Pull down the carpet at the top and feel around. This switch shuts off the fuel if there has been a crash. They are also known to go bad on many occassions, which means no fuel. Under the switch is a pronged connector which you would pull apart from the switch to relieve gas pressure. On the top is a plastic rail and in that is a button. This button should be pushed down to activate. I don't know what year they started putting these in Rangers someone else can explain that hopefully. Good luck.
Happy Thanksgiving Well I found the spot where the Inertia Switch was!! The owners before me must have removed it! Why I don't know Mother nature is not so cooperative these past days but Will keep on Trucking. Hey how can I put a picture of my truck next to my screen name?
uhhhhh.... ok, I will ask the stupid question: What do you mean by removed? Is there a "bypass" in it's place? I was under the impression that our trucks wouldn't run without it. If the previous owners "rigged" a bypass somewere along the wires, then that is the first place I would look for a wire fault.
PS - if it hasn't been mentioned yet, the switch is a safety device to cut the fuel in the event of a crash/rollover. The truck is more dangerous for you and your passengers without one.
