Question

Ok Ruhbarb,

Well I had to pay to get the truck out of the dealer but got two hours of service charges removed. I also got the service manager to give free advice.Try the HP Pump first. It worked! I was never so happy to hear an engine turn over!LOL!!! There is still a problem .After Idoling until the engine got to temp.I started to increase the fuel pressure by stepping down on the pedal. Well let me tell you it choke itself to a STALL . I think the Two pump system can not keep up with the demand for fuel . The pump that came out & the one that was replaced was the same. Anyone have any advice??? Truck keeps choking out!!!

Maybe the other pump is bad as well, so the HP pump is trying to do all the work. Or maybe the filter is plugged from all the messing around with things, there might have been some crap carried through the fuel lines from changing the pump. I'd check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. -TD

I recall someone else asking about that, I don't have it on my truck, I only have the one fuel pump. I don't know what that is that you have, my books don't seem to show it. -TD

Red face

I'm not sure myself what it is? It looks like a filter box of some kind. All I know now is with two new fuel pumps & a new fusable link the truck still is not right! It will Idol but if you step on the GAS just dies out. Like it is starving for fuel....Help so close but yet so Far

The other canister you mentioned on the frame rail (if I am remembering correctly on my truck....) is a return resivoir. If you follow the lines I think you will find it is not between the path of the fuel from the tank to the pump. It should be inline going back. I have never replaced mine, nor do I know if it is a good idea to even try, but you can always test it to see if air/fuel come out one side of the hose when applied to the other.

As far as the engine choking off idle...... I would check the PSI at the rail like TigerDan said, and then see if it falls ALOT when you hit the throttle. You should be able to do the whole check while under the hood. Also, if you have a hand vaccume tester there is a test to see if the FPR is bad. At this point I am thinking it is since they usually run on vaccume which will change when the throttle is opened. If you don't have a Haynes or Chilltons I could probably look up the test for you.

Question

G2IC_Wraith,

I have a vacume tester & a compression tester that I should beable to modify to fit. Tell me would the wires being bad for the o2 sensor have anything to do with this problem??

I've got 225K on my 87 Ranger 2.9 & have owned it since it was new. I've never touched the black canister. As G2IC sez, it's just a reservoir.
As mentioned the thing to do now is test fuel pressure at the fuel rail (schraeder valve) as described in your Haynes manual.
The O-2 sensor is ignored until the engine warms up, so if it's dying when cold the O-2 has nothing to do with it.
If fuel pressure is good, take a couple of minutes to pull the trouble codes.

i have the same basic problem, but mine will run sometimes, sometimes it wont. i pulled a code that said the low speedfuel pump relay-open circuit failure. it says that even after i replaced the relay. would this point more towards the fuel pump.

Angry

Ok Folks,

It's a new week and a new problem.Well over the weehend I change the HP pump & the fuel filter the truck was running great in the driveway for about 2 hours. I went on a short trip with the truck & once again it brokedown again. No power to the pumps!! I'm getting . The ford dealer said they put a new fusable link in for the fuel pumps BUT I CAN"T FIND IT !!! Sorry just venting. Can someone tell me where to look? I have been looking for hours .The new pumps were comin on & off with no problems. I shut thhe truck off for 15 minutes. Went back outside to go for a ride. When I heard the HPpump running with no key on. I started the truck & it was running fine until it just shut off on the ride. Like I said in pryer post I'm not that knowledgeable with the wiring on a vehicle. Any help would be welcome.

another idea

have you tried replacing the ignition module? i was on the phone with the guy at the parts store and he said that he had something similar happpen to his full size ford....just like yours and mine it would die going down the road and then sometimes start back up, or sometimes sit for days and not run...so anyway he replaced the ignition module and never had another problem...like you and me, the pumps wont run, but the relay will click and has power...apparently these modules go ALL THE TIME. and when they get hot, they just stop working, and i guess they are tied in with the fuel pumps....its only 30 bucks at vip for my 86...probably the same for your 87...let me know if this works, or i will probably try with my truck and ill let you know...good luck

3 things need to happen for your pumps to come on

1 When you turn the key to run the main relay closes & sends 12 volts to the fuel pump relay

2 The computer applies a ground to the fuel pump relay & the relay closes.

3 There is ALWAYS (key on or off)voltage to the fuel pump relay from the fuse link & when the computer grounds the relay the voltage from the fuse link goes to the fuel pumps.

You said that the fuel pumps were running with the key off. Theres only 2 things that can cause that, a cross in the wiring somewhere or a stuck closed fuel pump relay.
I'd change the 8 buck relay & see if that cures it.

is yours carbureted? i think that the only ignition module on a fuelie is the ecm, which would suck.

No my engine is fuel injected. I think I'm going to test the pumps with a hot wire to see if they will run.If they do I will put in a direct power line with a toggle switch in.
