I have tried it both ways key on & cranking the motor. Still no fuel. I will check the volts in th AM.Last day of vacation.Let you all know how it goes.
Lucky charms. I went back and read all your posts. you mentioned little fuel coming out between in tank fuel pump and fuel filter, even after you replaced the pump. Do you know for sure that the line from the gas tank and also return line to the gas tank are NOT blocked. Also, the inertia switch when unplugged and the engine cranked relieves fuel pressure. if you don't have an inertia switch to unplug how are you relieving the presurre before pulling the fuel line. If you are NOT relieving fuel pressure everytime you pull a line the gas should spew out. If it is not then you don't have fuel pressure which means your lines are probably blocked or the pump is not working to it's max. Do you have 2 pumps on yours and if so where is the high pressure pump located ?
This morning I went to check for voltage to the pumps.Mind you in the past 5 days I could hear the pumps engauge.Today they don't engauge & no volts to either one. Both relays have volts. The inertia wire has no volts. Also the fuel from the filter was from my first check to see if there was fuel comming out of the lines. Working with electric is not my thing. Oh well I will keep trying.
No pwr to the switch or pumps sounds like it is either a fuse, or the relay under the hood is bad. You say there is pwr to the relay, but nothing past that???? Do me a favor and smack the relay acouple of times with the plastic end of a screwdriver. As I mentioned before, a member here on the boards said when he did this with the key "on" he heard the pumps power right up. It is fast and it won't cost you anything.
Try this only if you dare, it could be dangerous. Get a long peice of wire and connect it to the +side of the battery, touch the other end to the wire going to the fuel pump for no more then a couple of seconds. More time will burn up the pump. Pump should run and truck should start and run for a couple seconds before it runs out of fuel. BE CAREFULL!!!

I suggest you forget everything you've done and start at the back and work your way to the front. So voltage to in-tank pump first. If no voltage check the wire. then fuse etc:. If voltage then check both pumps for pressure. I think you have been running around checking to many things at once. Back to basics...back of truck to front, check the wires first at tank.
I surrrender ! This is my Plow truck & I need to get it going. The storms are comming!! I want to thank you all for your help & support I will continue to Post & support the folks at FTE. Its going to a local dealer $$$$$$$$$$ OUCH Well at least it will get done right.
Well Last I had told you folks.I was having the 87 ranger towed to the DEALER! Well day one they told me it was a fusable link. Day two today they tall me its the HP Pump. It's not working. I asked how much to change that on top of the 5.5 hours of labor all ready invested? Needless to say a MORTGAGE PAYMENT comes to mind!!! They want $375 to change it & don't no if its going to get the truck to start!!! I can buy the pump for $75 put it in myself @ AAP but dont know if it will fix the problem??? Sorry I'm looking for advice I'm very confused on what to do? If they do the work it could cost me $700 or more not knowing if that is the cure (my marriage can't take this!) LOL!! Well if you folks have any advice feel free.
well i feel your pain....i have a 1986 ranger, 2.9....except to further complicate matters mine has 2 tanks....which means 2 pumps on the frame rail and 2 in tank pumps.....my ranger also will sputter going down the road and die,....sometimes it will start back up, and sometimes it will sit there for a few hours and the fuel pump will miraculously run.....but also fyi when the rear tank wont run, the front tank wont either....so i think it lies in the relay, the computer, or god knows where deep in the belly of this pain in the butt trucks wiring harness....but hey, its interesting that your truck is having the same problem at the same time as mine....well who knows...if i fix mine, i will certainly post and let EVERYONE know how to fix theres....GOOD LUCK MAN!!!
