I have owned the truck for two years. Much to my surprise the inertia switch has been removed & a bypass wire put in. I not sure if this would be the problem after two or more years?
Well I will start at the beginning. My name is Matt.I own a 1987 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4 with a 2.9L 5 speed. I have had this for two years with no problems. Well that changed on tuesday of last week. While driving the truck it just stopped running. The engine will crank & with some sprayed fuel into the trottle body it will run. What checks have I done you say? Well I have checked the Inertia switch there is not one (that's right NOT ONE) the owner before me took it out & put a bypass wire in. The wires at the connectors were cooked! So I spliced the wires back together with new connectors. There is no pressure at the release valve on the fuel rail when cranking the motor. I pulled off the line between fuel filter & the pump on the rail.A little fuel came out of the filter but nothing out of thr line when the key was turned on.Also no fuel when cranking the engine. I repeated the same thing @ the rear pump & no fuel again. I then pulled the rear pump out to replace it with a new one. I blew all the lines & changed the two relay on the fender out but still no fuel! I'm starting to think it is the ECM. I have tryed to pull codes but the engine light won't flash. If you folks have any Ideas it would be thankful!!
you blew the lines out from the front all the way to the back? does the pump in the tank ccome with a new pick-up screen for in the tank? if you hear the fuel pump in the tank comming on you should see pressure at the front fuel rail regardlessif the ecm is bad.
CowboyBilly9Mile has a point, you should check the actual voltage(and grounding) at the pump, it may have just enough voltage going to it to make noise and not enough to build pressure.
I see you started a new thread for this..... You may want to put a link to the oyher yhread so folks can catch up.
I remember you took my advice checking for flow at the filter, and you didn't get anything. When you replaced the pump (in-tank????) did you test for power at the plug on top of the tank? Or just clamp a hose to the tank pump and see if any fuel comes out then.
No I did not test for power.I took for granted that the power was there because I can hear the pump engauge. I will check in the AM for power. How many volts should there be @ the pumps? Also how do I link the post together?
So you can hear the pump engage initially when you first turn on the key and then it turns right back off? And no fuel with that initial hit? Maybe stopped up screen on bottom of the pick up? Maybe a split hose in the tank at the pump making it suck air and not fuel? Have you cycled the pump quite a few times to get it primed from replacing the pump? (sure by now ya probably have turned it on enough)
If it was the hot wired inertia switch I don't think the pump would kick in at all but not sure as I've never had one that was tripped to know this. Maybe wire you in a switch and hot wire just to test the pump? Don't think you'll get the pump running full out til the motor is running but I could be wrong about that one. It could turn on full with the motor cranking. Let us know any progress.
I put the new pump in the tank & started the truck by spraying fuel into the T/Body.With that I was hoping that it would fully engauge both pumps.Well it did'nt. I'm thinking if the wire for the inertia switch went bad that the ECM is still reading it as a tripped switch. I pulled the positive cable off to try to reset the ECM but NO GOOD! I guess I'm looking for a needle in a haystack...
I had the same problem on my '96 F150. I couldn't get fuel to the injectors. Ran fine on carb cleaner. Sometimes it would start and "run" at about 1000 RPM with the gas to the floor. Other times it wouldn't hit a pop. After 3 days of chasing ghosts I ended up getting frustrated and took it (had it towed) to the shop. It was the ECM on mine. Just up and quit one day. Ford wanted half a zillion dollars for the thing. I found one at a junkyard for $50. I let the shop install it and on she went. There were a bunch of different ECM's for mine. It had to match the truck exactly (year, engine, transmission, part#, 4X2, 4X4, etc.). I searched the internet and only found one for sale that matched my truck in the state. Could be other problems too, but that was mine.
If there is no fuel pressure, that is the reason it won't start not the ecm. I a little confused by the posts, is there fuel pressure on the fuel rail and what is the pressure if you know?
Dave
Put an inertia switch back, if your in an accident and a fuel line breaks you will pump the entire tank on the ground and that wouldn't be to good if you stuck in the truck.
